Maybe Micky Adams is planning opening lines by sacrificing a pawn with d5 if White plays b3. It looks speculative, but otherwise Black's position looks unappealing, and I can't see any other way to generate play.

Adams did play 18...d5, Rybka likes it and is assessing as close to even after cd5 bd3 kd3 rfd8 which seems plausible

Charlie,
I agree Short has a plan, maybe an easier plan than Hawkins and for that reason he might win, BUT Hawkins has two Bishops and if he opens the position up then he will be clearly better. If Short wants to win he will have to open things up and with Hawkins having two Bishops this will involve quite some risk.

1. My internet connection must be exceptionally slow!

2. If anyone at Sheffield is reading this, could they politely whisper to the commentary room that the sound is still not working?

3. I am mainly following Richard Bates's game. What should he play in the current position (14 Rxb7)? Qa6 or Nd4 are the two obvious candidate moves, but I can't decide. Would hate to be sitting at the board with my clock running in this position.

I guess it's hard to argue with hawkins strategy. Against the top two seeds he's decided to just shut up shop and not lose and then try and get points from the rest.

Seemed like a strange opening choice by short. some sort of chigorin defence?

Looking at Howells - Adams after 18...d5. After 19 cxd5 Bxd3+ 20 Kxd3 Ne7 21 Kc4 Rfd8 (or the other rook?) 22 Rd1, anyone have any good suggestions for Black?

EDIT: See Matthew Turner's post (Na5+ followed by c6). Nice idea, Matthew. Is it enough for Black, do you think? I can't work it out.

White's lack of development is certainly starting to show if adams can play like this successfully!

Never mind a player of Gawain's ability, I don't think I would be relishing this as Black against anyone. You have to admire Richard's courage in grabbing the pawn originally.
