Adams will soon pick up another pawn and more importantly Palliser will never be able to do much with those rooks.

Howell may be struggling? I don't know, but the ...Bxf2+ punt is certainly giving Simon Ansell a game.

the draw on board one is no surprise. Will Nick be White v Adams tomorrow too (anybody?)

Gordon v R Pert is very interesting

I see, Howell is prepared to lose the f4 pawn if he can march his king over to a6. Interesting. His passed a-pawn would certainly cause more trouble than Black's passed f-pawn.

Thanks, Jonathan. I see Zhou appears to be collapsing against Wells (EDIT: 21.Rc6! is nice. and doesn't 23.Rxd7 win?). I agree that Adams will likely mop up. Is Black slightly better in Jones-Hawkins? I like the king march for Howell, and still not a clue about R. Pert-Gordon.

Black can't possibly have full compensation in Gordon - Pert, as the Bishops are blockaded, though never trivial proving these things over the board. I'd have thought some plan for white involving h2-h4 was possible. In the other games I'm thinking Jones still worse but can hold, Adams to win, and am starting to like Howell's position more and more.

Does 23.Rxd7 not work? Followed by Nxd6+ and Nxc4?

EDIT: Or even 23.Nxf5 (hadn't quite got round to looking at that yet...)

<remove silliness - I missed the knight on f6 was won back after 23.Nxf5>

I am surprised that he went 1...Nf6 - at least in retrospect: Wells is a known trompovsky lover and clearly Yang-Fan was not at home in the position he got. Why not just play 1...g6, as most KI players can afford to do against Trompovky-essaying opponents? (Admittedly there is then a risk of 2 e4, but most KI players can handle a Modern if necessary - or, against Wells, play 2...b6 and hope to win on time).
