That would depend on what took place and what was said.
This is a great discussion. Were either of you actually there?
I'm certainly not aware of any incident that took place along these lines, certainly not in the way described. Do you know any more than me?

I think some people may be (incorrectly?) reading between the lines of this post:

It could reasonably be inferred that Alan was talking about an actual incident, and you (Loz) were responding and saying that you were unaware that the rules covered MP3 players, leading others to assume that this hypothetical actual incident involved an MP3 player.

Loz .. mind you don't fall off that fence you are sitting on - especially as it seems you are on shaky ground !!!

By the way, I was interested in your earlier comment, when again you quoted part of a post I had made and replied with ... "I wasn't aware that the rule extended to MP3 players".

As neither I nor anyone else had previously mentioned MP3 players in this thread, I wondered just why you happened to mention those ? (Something you know that many others might not ???)

Adam .. it could just be a hypothetical incident that occured at Sheffield (with or without an MP3 player) .. but then again !!!

However, I am just still interested to hear views on abuse given to someone mentioning about mobiles / devices having to be turned off

You are talking theoretically about an incident. I know nothing more, I am just aware that something happened, to which there were no independent witnesses, so I see no point in pretending that we actually know any more than two versions of the same incident. The only people who actually know what happened were the two people involved. I assume that is the case? If it is the case it's best dropped.

Lots of things can be infered and assumed but it's not always the best way to answer a question :? The incident I am aware of, is rather different to the one described by Alan and so I assume the two are un-connected. The one I am aware of involved a respected International Arbiter being aggressively confronted by a spectator who refused to say who he was and on realising he was in the wrong refused to apologise. I spoke to the Arbiter in question who was somewhat shaken from his unnerving experience.

But actually you don't know any of this for a fact. I accept that you believe it. I prefer to remain as neutral as possible.

As I was at the tournament in question and spoke to the arbiter seconds/minutes after the incident I feel I have a reasonable understanding of what took place.

Loz .. regarding the incident to which you refer; did you not do as you said you would in an earlier post and .. "ask for the other person's version of events and then ask any witnesses present ... and try and reach a balanced judgement based on all the information." ?

Yours does a different version to the question I was asking, because I was wondering what would happen if someone was seen using a mobile phone in the playing hall. (If it had been an MP3 player, it must have been one without earphones because the person was not wearing any yet was still looking down into the device whilst walking through the hall. (but as we have since found out, even MP3 players were not allowed). When it was pointed out to the person that such devices were not allowed within the playing hall, the FIRST reply was "It is not on." However, as the screen was still lit up, it was obvious that the device was still switched on, but when this was again pointed out to the person, a reply came back of "P** off".

However, as you say, yours must be a different incident.

Indeed it must.

If someone with the screen of such a device lit up claims it's not on, then they are obviously not willing to put up with some random person asking them about it or asking them to turn it off. I would have backed away at that point and/or referred it to an arbiter. No need to go looking for trouble.

I have to say that if the person concerned is not a player in the event, and is making their way out of the playing hall at the time, then it is often more disturbing to the tournament to have an arbiter charge across the hall to tell them to turn it off, rather than letting them make their way out of the hall ;-)

I was walking around the hall with my iPod / mp3 player checking my emails when I was told off....

Given the allegations against Feller and the French match captain at the Olympiad, you do not want anyone potentially in contact with the players, even if only by line of sight, to be receiving external communications.
