Gawain Jones finished second with a 2692 performance on 7/9, half a point behind Indian grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran, whilst Glenn Flear scored 6. Gawain also qualified for the sixteen player knockout which included Anand and Mamedyarov as well as the top fourteen placed players from the Masters.

Gawain beat Pavel Tregubov 3-2 in the first round (last sixteen) before losing to world number fourteen Shakhriyar Mamedyarov 1.5-0.5 in the quarter final. World champion Viswanathan Anand won the final 2-0 against Mamedyarov.

Congratulations to Mark Hebden who won the FIDE rated Premier with 7/9, half a point ahead of Bogdan Lalic, Jack Rudd, Alexei Slavin and Hans Tikkanen.

Stephen Prior won the FIDE rated major with a core of 7.5/9, a point clear of Peter Tart and Ostap Orishko who shared second on 6.5.

Four players shared the English Seniors on 4/5; Oliver Jackson, Ken Norman, Michael Yeo and George Dixon whilst top seed Stephen Berry finished on 3.5.

The England team consisted of James Holland, Craig Whitfield, Henrik Stepanyan and Peter Batchelor and was coached by Adam Hunt.

The team won five, drew one and lost four matches finishing on 21.5 game points in equal seventh place (9th on tie-break). James scored 5.5/10, Craig 6.5, Henrik 4.5 and Peter 5.

The Scottish team of Andrew McClement, Shivan Murdochy, Ali Roy and Sam Gregory finished on 21 points in equal eleventh place.

I was reading the report on this from Chessbase, and I noticed that the flag they used for Gawain Jones appears to be the New Zealand one:

But everywhere else, the results say ENG. Is that NZ flag just Chessbase getting it wrong, or it is something to do with having lived there for a period of time?

Recently active GM Matthew Sadler will be taking part in next years Wijk aan zee tournament, where he will be playing in group C.

Judging by recent form this could get pretty scary for his opponents as his grading would seem to put him in Group B at the very least.

It seems they have reduced the number of rounds so that the organisers have the opportunity to arrange an expensive outing.

Nothing has been sent to the ECF Board mailing list. Whether or not the new Junior Director was kept up to date independently of the Board, I don't know.

FIDE changing the format of their competitions at the last minute would hardly be without precedent.

Edit: Just found this page, which says: "The Chief Arbiter after consultations with FIDE and the Organizers may make changes on the tournament schedule. Such a change will be announced in due time." It includes the changed schedule.
