The first big upset today, in round 3, and by an English junior:

GM Glenn Flear 0-1 Sam Franklin

Thank you Leonard, I watched Hebden v Howell, and none of it made any sense.

Naturally Sam Franklin is an established BCM columnist. Who else could have spotted his potential so quickly?

Possibly you were standing on your head as it was Howell v Hebden.
David innovated with 0-0-0. Although the white queenside was wide open, it was hard to attack. Rb8 instead of c5 would have been the acid trest. When Mark played c5 for the second time he was totally lost.

Edouard v Das was the game to savour. Oh... I know all draws are boring.

Yeah I realized this morning I had got it back to front, but still a strange game. Mark comes from Leicester like me, so I follow his chess doings.

The game on Board 6 today (Vovk-Furman) is highly amusing. Black plays 20 moves in 20 minutes and then realises he is lost! Looks like the way I used to play when I visited the pub (for the odd hour) before the game.

Live games hosting was pretty busy yesterday with traffic of a little over 6.7GB peaking at just under 2Mbps so quite a lot!

From Round 4, Franklin-S Williams was a hell of a game if anyone missed it.

Franklin found a neat tactical trick that appeared to force mate in two. Williams therefore had one move at his disposal and seemingly, no way to stop the mate. No option then - he had to find mate himself, using a series of forcing checks. This included a knight sac with check just to clear the way for another piece to come through the gap vacated by the knight. All very clever - especially if he had it all worked out!

Liquidating to a dead drawn position seems to be the most that Howell can achieve. Has to be said that Black v Simon Knott is not an ideal pairing when you have just lost a game and desperately need a win to get back on track. (As soon as I typed that, they agreed a draw).

I agree with Colin above: Franklin v Williams in round 4 was sensational. Williams perhaps deserved more credit for beating Knott earlier in the event too - it was their first decisive result in about ten encounters!

Actually they haven't agreed a draw, but I cannot imagine any other result.

David Haydon playing a good game so far.

Well done on the live commentary today. Just need to get the word out and hopefully the viewer numbers will jump significantly.

On an unrelated point, has anyone considered putting utilising these live broadcasts (of just the games and/or commentary) to put out chess notices (if more commercial adverts are not yet viable)? I'm sure tournaments like Sean's would benefit from increased exposure to an international audience.
