Alex,
I am not sure why Mike should be answering the questions either. It also true that the Glorney organistaion could take or leave the 4NCL's offer. The problem is that the offer is good for the English and Welsh and in my view possibly not good for the Irish and Scots. How does the Glorney commitee move forward? Well really they have to take the 4NCL offer, because they know that the ECF is so incompetent that if they don't get the 4NCL to arrange a venue that it might not happen.

I am personally very impressed with this venue and in particular the silent playing hall. The team rooms are spacious and the food is good and cheap for a place like this.

Two flashy finishes on boards 1 and 3 in the England-Ireland match. Sporting of the Irish players to allow the mates rather than resigning.

Thanks Andrew! One of the Junior 4NCL weekends will be held at Daventry Court this coming season (the other two are at Hinckley Island), so the Glorney Cup is an excellent dry run. The plan is to move the the Junior 4NCL to Daventry Court for all three weekends for the following season.

A few of us have got together this week and are almost decided about entering a Welsh Female team into the J4NCL next season.

I see the 4NCL accounts every year, and have the impression (though I don't have a good head or memory for figures) that the 4NCL makes a loss in running the J4NCL. So instead of asking what the 4NCL will do with its share of the commission, the real question seems to be why the ECF should get a share of the commission, since it does not seem to do the job of finding the venue and - on its track record at any rate - can hardly be trusted to put the funds back into junior chess.

I should add that Jonathan sees the accounts in his capacity as a member of 4NCL Limited (it will be remembered that I mentioned earlier in this thread that the 4NCL is legally a company limited by guarantee, and Jonathan along with the other members such as David Anderton has oversight over the 4NCL's financials and strategy in a similar way to shareholders in a 'normal' company). The J4NCL made a loss in 2010, a profit in 2011 and another loss in 2012 - mainly because it's proved quite difficult to pitch entry fees and prize money at the right level for an event that is still in its infancy. I recall having a similar difficulty when the 4NCL itself was in its infancy. :?

I should say that the J4NCL has received sponsorship both from the John Robinson Trust and from Barcelo (now Puma) since its inception, which has been a great help in keeping the losses as low as they have been. One the main expenses of course are the coaching costs, which the sponsorship has been instrumental in helping to defray.

Matthew Turner wrote:I am not completely happy with this. It means Chess Scotland have a choice between organising their Glorney in Daventry (because the Puma properties in Scotland are not suitable) and receiving their share of the commission, or organising the event at an equally good venue in Scotland but being unable to make a profit on the event because this is against the rules of the competition.
Really? Why not find an alternative Scottish venue (non Puma) and receive a similar level of commission?
