A tough game for young Matthew. Still playing in a strong tournament does get you "personal tuition" from strong players. Jack showing that how many tempo you can afford to spend on positonal measures is a matter for delicate judgement, particulalry against someone with his attacking flair.

Surely Charlie Storey didn't just win that game?

Were there any improvements for Black?
Staying in bed/enjoying the sunshine/going to the cinema instead of playing may have been three definite improvements for Black.

I had exactly the same thoughts when I looked - it looks like Black mates or wins Charlie's queen. A definite case of mistaken input here, not like Palliser's game yesterday...

Your right how could he win that game unless Charlie won on time? or the position is wrong on the board?
when you are successful many losers bark at you.

On a related note, can anyone tell me why Palliser just sacced a piece? I have to admit I'm struggling to understand it.
True glory lies in doing what deserves to be written; in writing what deserves to be read.

Jack is definitely in big trouble - will get a stern talking to/possible spanked bottom when I see him next! :D

On a serious note, well done to Jack on his wins (today and yesterday). Well done to both the juniors for having the courage to be there in the first place. Credit to all the players, they did all push for success, but experience won on the day.

Take the rook. You might get mated, but at least you will have compensation for it!

* i.e. 20... Bxb1

Err scrap that. 20... Bxb1 21. Nd5 looks irritating.

Yeah, 20...Bxb1's an improvement. I reckon I've got more than enough, though. One amusing line is 21.Nd5 Qc6 22.Nxe7 Qe4 23.d7+ Kd8 24.Qd6 Qd3 25.Nd5! Qxf1+ 26.Ng1 and black has to give up the queen to avoid mate.

We're seeing quite a lot of quick wins today. I have to say I'm most impressed by Hawkins' and Jack's games so far, both very clinical and direct!

Looks like Jones-Gordon might be heading for a draw: [Event "?"]
28... b5 29. Qxb5 Nxe4 30. Bxd8 Rxd8 31. Qxb7 Qf3 32. O-O Nxg3 33. fxg3 Qxg3+ with a draw?

Well done to Marcus Osborne, continuing with his good form to get a draw with Matthew Turner. He is performing well above grade.
