I really do not know why the ECF website does that. It would be much easier to access it if it were a page on the website.

Common courtesy. Let someone speak for themselves first, and then add more information to threads on this forum with internet searches if you wish. Doing the internet searches first risks throwing up a misleading picture as not all the information will be there.

There's always GoogleDocs. They can be viewed online or downloaded in Word, OpenDocument format, RTF, PDF, plain text or HTML. That should keep everybody happy. (Except that one guy still using DisplayWrite on a PC-AT.)

Never, ever, use Google Docs - always download properly. Google Docs doesn't always display the text correctly. In the last year, I've been accused by both Sean Hewitt and Mike Gunn of omitting key sections of a document. I hadn't; Google Docs had.

GoogleDocs can certainly make a mess of a complex Word document (tables and columns can throw it off), but so can Word itself. The usual culprit in the latter case is using a font that the document's recipient doesn't have. Compose the document online in GoogleDocs and you're unlikely to have a problem.

I would definitely advocate GoogleDocs as a more flexible solution. And if all you're doing is reading a document I can't see how Word is more flexible than PDF.

There is still a lot to be said for Word Perfect or Vu Writer: both of these hold a special place for me.

When a lecturer at The University of Reading in IT I was asked to help a secretary who was trying out Word Perfect for the first time.

I was asked why the corrections she was making were not taking effect.

After I had scrapped the lumps of Tippex from the new fangled Visual Display Unit I was able to provide an explanation.

For a full-on SGML style approach I marked up my D.Phil thesis using LaTeX being scared of its super-set, TeX.

Anyone used LaTeX or Tex? I'm not referring to specialist clothing or cooking products.
