That was a very interesting read. Just for fun I quickly researched "Mr Bee" and came up with the following family tree:
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/perso ... s/GR2G-HDS

It looks like his mother died in childbirth at the age 23 and his father died four years later.

Leonard Barden comments: "He was my predecessor as chess editor of the Evening Standard. It was barely a column, just a two-move problem with solutions and no other commentary and appeared anonymously, which is why I thought it must be some hack in the office. So I wrote to the Features Editor offering a better column with chess news, games, and game positions as well as problems. This was accepted, although the FE pulled a face when I stated my proposed fee which was quite modest but apparently several times more than Bee received. I still didn't know who I had replaced until some months later at a party I told somebody the story and that person, who knew Bee, claimed that Bee was broken-hearted by being sacked and that I was some kind of monster."

Are these enough clues for you all?
Probably not, Gerard. I've pursued Parker for some time now, covering some of the same ground as you, without coming anywhere near establishing his identity.

Some good news: I've tracked down a forename for J A Moore, by means of matching an address given for him in the 1959/60 BCF Yearbook when he was hon.sec. of Metropolitan CC to one in the electoral list for that year. He is/was John A Moore (last played graded chess in 2014). Is he still around?

J A Moore is not to be confused with his near-namesake Metropolitan CC club colleague and close rival in many grading lists (though not the 1956 one), namely J J Moore. The latter was Jack Jean Moore, born 1907 (on 1 January if you believe the death record - I'm not sure I do) in the Pas de Calais, France (of a French mother, hence the middle name) and died in 2005 in Havering, Essex. He went on playing for Metropolitan into his nineties. There was a nice article about him in CHESS by Jimmy Adams, I think in the late 1990s (I don't have a reference to hand).

Message for John re: 1957 British
Second Week Junior, Section B: (1) [L/GS] Strike (Plymouth) 5/5; (2) Vivian Roy Macey (Plymouth) 4; (3-4) Susan Collins (Plymouth), R A Pearce (Plymouth) 2; (5) Lyn A Stammwitz (London, later Brown) 1½; (6) R Way (Devonport) ½.
Sorry, Lyn married Jeanette S Brown in 1969, he wouldn't of changed his last name as the etiquette in those days was for the lady to change their last name.

I guess if J S Parker was at grammar school in 1929 then he would have been born sometime between 1911 and 1918.

The most obvious candidate is John Stanley Parker, whose birth was registered in Manchester in Q4 1911. However there are four other J S Parkers whose births were registered in Lancashire between 1911 and 1919.
I'm pretty sure John Stanley Parker (1911-1986) is not the chess player we're looking for. I'm moving onto the the next J S Parker on my list - John Stewart Parker, whose birth was registered in Barton upon Irwell in Q3 1913.

It is a bit frustrating that "P J Harrison (Bolton & Nottingham University)" is proving so difficult to crack. You would have thought that more trace would survive of chess plied at Nottingham University, or maybe not? Is there any way to determine if he was an undergraduate or postgraduate, and did he stay in the area or relocate somewhere else later? If people move overseas, and are relatively obscure, they can vanish. Do other grading lists help?

Having said that, there is a "Peter John Harrison" who was an Old Boltonian from 1944 to 1955.

There is another "Peter John Harrison" who "changed surname later to Brameld":

A Father Peter Brameld (went from Anglican to Orthodox) died in 2005. Have to leave that there now.

Oops! Thanks for that, Paul, now fixed. Had I consulted this post earlier, I wouldn't have committed this blunder.

There's an obituary of that Peter John Harrison here:

No mention of chess or Nottingham University.

P. J. Harrison is recorded as playing for Nottinghamshire in 1955-6 only. Perhaps he was doing an MA after Cambridge.

P. J. Harrison is mentioned below under Junior A as being at Bolton School in 1951:

Strange to see no mention of Nottingham University or chess in the obit though, as Gerard says, Nottingham might have been the location of his teacher training. To set against that: (a) teacher training wasn't obligatory for Oxbridge graduates back in the day; (b) PJ Harrison's location was given as Manchester in the 1958 rating list (though back to Bolton in 1961); (c) he was a good enough player to get a draw (via a won position) vs Bernard Cafferty in the 1956 BCF Major Open, and then drew against him again a few months later in a Notts v Derby county match. His third meeting with Bernard (Dec 1956) proved unlucky and he lost. In 1960 PJ Harrison lost to GM Sheldrick when playing for Lancs v Yorks in the county final.

That's quite a lot of high-level chess activity. Perhaps his obituarist (his daughter) was unaware of all this chess activity but I have my doubts.

But hold the front page... is this our guy?

Well done John. Looks like he went by the name Jeff, which explains why we couldn't find him.

Two P J Harrisons at the same school? It happens. The England football squad at Mexico 86 containd Gary Stevens and Gary A. Stevens which led to the chant 'Two Gary Stevens, there's only two Gary Stevens.'

But did two P J Harrisons play chess?

Who played for Cheshire in the 1960s? See board 15 below.

H W Calvert (Ilford; 5a) (Harold? William? Seemingly from N.Ireland originally, 1920s/1930s in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, 1940s/1950s in Ilford, Essex)
I agree with the forenames, but not entirely with the English timeline.

As John has probably already found this information, I will merely state that the 1901 Census and 1911 Census records provide a very strong candidate for a Harold William Calvert, born in either 1892 or 1893, being the Northern Ireland chess player. The evidence points to this person being brought up in the Strandtown area of Belfast and then in the mid-1920s becoming the honorary secretary of the Strandtown Chess Club.

His address in 1925 was 1 Ormiston Gardens, Knock - in the east of Belfast, like Strandtown [source: (Dublin) Evening Herald]. He continued to live in Belfast until at least 1932.

Now to connect him to living in England. I would summarise his time in English chess something like Lancashire 1930s, Derbyshire 1940s and Essex 1950s.

After 1932, the Northern Ireland H.W. Calvert goes missing from the radar but from November 1933 [source: Blackpool Times] a H.W. Calvert surfaces at the Blackpool Chess Club. According to the BCM he represented Lancashire in a number of county matches from 1934 to 1937.

The trail goes cold (for me anyway) until finding him in Derbyshire in 1945 [source Long Eaton Advertiser].

First, there is a report of him conducting a lightning tournament at the Long Eaton CC. At that point, he is a member of the Celanese CC (presumably in some way connected to the British Celanese - later Courtaulds - factory). Shortly afterwards is this report:
Long Eaton Chess Club has been fortunate enough to have Mr H. W. Calvert, of Borrowash, as a new member. He is an experienced player having played for several county teams. He will add considerable strength to the team as a top board player, and should prove to be a valuable coach to the local players.
He remains in Derbyshire until at least 1949. At some point the became captain of the county team, I found a reference to him playing on board 2 in a Derbyshire -v- Lincolnshire county match (played 7th December 1946 in Nottingham) in the 1947 BCM (page 13).

Heading on to Ilford, Essex in the 1950s, we have the references to him in the Gradings Lists. I have been unable to find any mention of him playing chess, but in 1957, 1959 and 1960 the BCM indicates that he is the Ilford Chess Congress Secretary to whom entries should be sent. So, now we have another address - 8 Harewood Drive, Ilford.

If there is a golden thread here, it is that Harold William Calvert involved himself in the organisational side of chess both in Northern Ireland and England.
