I think we will play either Iceland, Austria or Denmark (or maybe whichever of Finland and Norway is floated up to our score group, unless we are floated up to the next score group, ah yes, over to AlexJohn Moore wrote:Well, the Ukraine tomorrow would be a bit of a worry. Who are you going to play in the next two rounds - back to Rogers J's conumdrum from some time back. Now, you have to play Adams, Short and Jones don't you. But does David H want to play again or do you play Nick in the last two rounds.
Incidentally Switzerland-Ukraine is an incredible result. I sort of assumed Switzerland might make 1 if Viktor was playing - he would make a half and somebody else would make a half. Even that would have been a surprise. But Viktor didn't and they made 3-1!!!

I made it:
Denmark v Sweden
Iceland v Israel
Austria v Ukraine
England downfloat
Finland v Lithuania
England v Norway
One thing I haven't checked here - this software makes this incredibly difficult to do so - is float history. This may have an impact.

Pretty much every scoregroup in the Women's section has a float, so I'm not even going to try to work it out properly! If I had to take a punt, I'd go for Switzerland v England.

That's my guess.John Moore wrote:Norway?
England get the downfloat, so we form a group:
England
Finland
Lithuania
Norway
So pairing from the extreme ends first, you get England v Norway. This is legal because they've not played before and there are no dodgy colour splits. Then Finland v Lithuania seems to work.

Re: England teams for 2011 European Team Championship
If there is nothing else to play for, team selection might come down to trying to help Adams do as well as possible in the board one medal tables (I presume there are actually individual board prizes to play for).
http://chess-results.com/tnr57856.aspx? ... ES&flag=30
If it is done on rating performance (as previously), then he is still in the lead, just, by five rating performance points from Topalov and ten from Aronian. I do hope, though, that the team still has targets to aim for (big wins in the last two rounds) to finish somewhere respectable. All a bit depressing really (and I hope none of them are reading this forum!).
Ah, here we go:
7. Individual prizes in team competitions
7.1 The players who obtained the best individual results on their respective boards shall receive gold medals. Silver and bronze medals shall be awarded to the second and third place winners.
7.1.1 For this purpose the players performance score is calculated if the player takes part in at least 70% of the rounds (for basic players) or 50% of the rounds (for reserve players).
The highest performance wins. In case of a tie it shall be broken by:
(a) mutual results (if all played each other);
(b) median Buchholz, the highest number wins;
(c) average rating of opponents, the highest number wins.
For calculating of performance rating the maximum rating difference of two players shall be 400 points. In the case of unplayed games for all calculations the current FIDE Tournament Rules shall be applied.

I got many things wrong when I was working it out:
(1) Sweden didn't downfloat, Georgia did for some reason
(2) We end up v Finland. I can only think that this was due to a colour problem; I don't see what the problem was because Norway would have had a 3-5 split, which is fine within the rules. Finland and Lithuania would have both been 4-4 if you had England v Norway and Finland v Lithuania. Now Finland have gone 3-5 instead.
While working this out, I saw that Spain had three "black"s in a row earlier on; which I hitherto thought was not allowed...
I can't understand these pairings. Anyone spot what I've missed?

Indeed. Congratulations to the England women team for a fine result there.Jonathan Rogers wrote:remembering that we do have two teamsEngland's women made probably their best result today in drawing with Greece, which involved wins against two WGMs on boards two and three.
