Not my area of responsibility but when the reserve list has been in existence it has been a regular thing that at this time of the year players who have had two or three near misses have been offered a place.

If a player has two identical performances he is more likely to qualify with it if achieved in an event at the end of the season than in one at the beginning when the number of qualifiers is less.

If this is the case then it should be on the qualification rules so people know exactly what is required, because it is not currently on there this shouldn't be allowed

I expect if any of them declared an intention to play, the activity requirement would be waived.

How odd. When I was in charge of the British Championships everything was my responsibility. I suppose having two people in charge would make that impossible.

Lawrence Cooper some years after the fact told me he had once simply entered the Championship, though not qualified. 'Just to see what would happen.' His entry was accepted and he played. I have no idea which member of my staff should have caught that. But I have no doubt I was responsible.

The rules regarding the reserve list are clearly on the British Championships website. Basically they have not been changed since I amended them in 2008. Neil Graham had a quite different system where anybody could be on the reserve list.

Surely Staunton isn't there. His FIDE Rating is too low. Somewhere it says in the regulations that GMs and IMs qualify if high enough rated, even though not active. I did NOT put in that rule and disagree with it.

Ben Purton. If you have a sensible reason to defer your place in the British, I am sure you will be allowed to do so to 2012. Previous postings demonstrated that you were very pleased to have qualified.

Remember also that it is a complex system. By definition mistakes will be made.

Perhaps I should have said 'my prime area of responsibility'. You are correct that I too would be accountable. When you have two people in charge it makes sense to split various duties. It also makes sense that, whenever possible, the other person has not been directly involved in something which is not totally objective. If there is a complaint the other person can then look at it with fresh eyes.
