It was many years before I realised that the DB Scott who had wriiten a text book on Mathematical Analysis, a core part of first year Cambridge Mathematics was the same person as the DB Scott who played on one of the top boards for Sussex. The mention of University of Sussex in the book should have been a clue.

He also used to teach at Portsmouth Grammar School, and taught chess to one of our current (Chandler's Ford) members (Patrick Pavey). He held various HCA Officer roles, mainly as the grading officer (1973 - 1986, and maybe longer) but was also the President 1969 to 1971.

Happy to receive any material and add. I have old minutes with details when the HJCA were part of the HCA, but since Joe French's time as you know it is a separate organisation.

The known Junior champions are listed, although I don't think these are held currently. There are also several of the original junior championship tournaments from the 1970's from the archives which I have posted.

A small correction - the player referred to as "Jeffrey Baille" on this page is actually Jeffrey Baillie (born in Portsmouth in 1967). He was a very strong player, though fellow Portsmouth resident Philip Rossiter had his number.

It seems that this "H Ward" is Henry Thomas (Harry) Ward. Born in Peckham on the 14th January, 1865. Died in Hove on the 30th November, 1947.

Brighton Chess Club Obituary: the Brighton Chess Club has sustained a sad loss by the death of Mr Henry Ward of Saltdean. Mr Ward died in his 83rd year at Hove General Hospital. He had maintained his vigorous personality right to the end. After being for many years in business at Croydon, he came to Brighton in 1930, and has been a member of, and most regular attendant at, the Brighton chess club ever since. he has always been a keen supporter of all the activities of Brighton and Sussex. Whenever he came into the club, his first remark to any disengaged member was " Are you waiting for a game?" . Mr Ward was a comparatively strong player. whilst he was in Croydon he won the championship of their club on 5 occasions and was for several years their match captain.
