'Go' master quits

A strange reason for quitting, and I am not just thinking of the comparison with chess. There are many other fields where machines perform better than humans.

There are, admittedly less prominent, people who have given up chess for the same reason. IMO it is fallacious logic in both cases.

I understand it though. I felt chess was a bit diminished when it became clear machines had overtaken humans. We've had a long time to come to terms with that, but I think until recently Go players thought their game might be different.

With some reason of course.

He is also really not that young anymore - and has been pro since he was 12(!) - so you can definitely see why he might react this way.

In other news, Usain Bolt has retired because he realises that he cannot compete with Lewis Hamilton.

Yes, just one of the "...other fields where machines perform better...".

"Yes, just one of the "...other fields where machines perform better..."."

But remember the cartoon where a Dalek says to his colleagues, "We must exterminate everyone in this house - Oh ****, they have gone upstairs."

Is cheating in go as bad as chess? That could be another reason to give up - I have been getting a bit bored of the number of engines I have to face on lichess recently
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

Korean World Champion Go player, Lee Sedol announced his retirement as he has encountered "an entity that cannot be defeated"!

I'm not sure about the translation into that statement and I'd hesitate to call AlphaGo an 'entity' in the complete sense of the word.
