Re: Nice 74
On 4 May, Roger de Coverly gave this link: https://www.kingpinchess.net/2016/02/ra ... tra-mundum.
Yesterday, Jonathan Manley posted a tweet with another Kingpin link: https://www.kingpinchess.net/2010/02/da ... 2000-2003/
He commented in the tweet that the financial matters are more serious than plagiarism.
Issue 40 of Kingpin published a long article on Raymond Keene's business dealings, "Machiavelli on Ice":
https://www.kingpinchess.net/2013/06/ki ... e-issue-40.
It is a follow-up to https://www.kingpinchess.net/2016/02/ex ... pin_39-pdf.
On Raymond Keene's financial affairs and plagiarism, there have been many reports in Private Eye.

Oh yes, and many things are more serious still. My point was that it is hypocritical to scream at somebody for doing something wrong, then think it's perfectly OK if you or someone else does it. But you already knew that.

Most of the material first appeared in the early 2000s. One additional revelation that came later concerned the legal advisers featuring in the earlier pieces. It subsequently became known that the firm of solicitors involved and its principal had been accused by Private Eye and more importantly legal and financial service regulators of involvement in promotion of financial schemes of dubious worth to investors. They had not been able to clear their names of the accusations and had been expelled, suspended, prohibited or fined as a consequence.O.G. That is truly disgusting.

Moreover the year 1826 is too early because the Divan did not open until 1828 (the customarily accepted year) or more likely 1829, and the name Simpson's wasn't in use for a long time after that.
There is also one player named on that board who didn't deserve to be named with the others, and indeed was a lesser player than Keene - namely Samuel Tinsley.
Presumably he also got on to the board because of his association with The Times.

If enough of us express disgust, Simpson's may restore the historic plaque to its pre-1998 condition.
As shown in the article I mentioned yesterday, Raymond Keene's name went on the plaque to mark his 50th birthday. It was added by a friend, Brian Clivaz.

I suspect that Simpson's regards GMRDKOBE as the world's leading authority on chess (presumably because he had told them so).O.G. Urcan wrote: ↑Mon May 31, 2021 7:24 amIf enough of us express disgust, Simpson's may restore the historic plaque to its pre-1998 condition.

"I've written more books on chess on anyone don't ya know..."
They might also consult Henry Gerald Mutkin on the matter. It would interesting to know of his take.
I' suspect that Henry is a strong Simpsons influencer.
Does anyone have HGMs ear? I assume Malcolm is close to Henry since they are both directors of Chess & Bridge, Henry having been one for 28 years and 9 months.

In September 2018, I contributed this image to Chess Notes (item 11004):Twitter exchanges between Nigel Short (pictured with Arkady Dvorkovich) and Raymond Keene.

This thread is quote a good expose on Keene. It seems as though he has stooped down from his perch many-a-time and damaged what reputation he has (or thought he had) in the process.

A tweet by @KeeneWatchers on 26 May added: "T. Harding's claim to have just ignored his Keene Number is an untruth. He sent @KeeneWatchers an email (275 words!) to complain that his number was too high, and he even gave supporting examples of his criticism of Raymond Keene."O.G. Urcan wrote: ↑Fri May 21, 2021 8:19 amYesterday, the @KeeneWatchers Twitter page said that on this forum someone had "written porkies about his Keene Number (9)."
On 19 May Tim Harding told us here:
A @KeeneWatchers tweet of 29 September 2015 says:"...I just looked at that Keenipedia page for the first time since it originally appeared many years ago. Then I treated it as the anonymous joke it evidently was and just ignored it though giving me a 9 is close to libel."
O.G. Urcan"Tim Harding's 'Keene number' must now go from 7 to 9. In 2013 he wrote to Keenipedia suggesting that it should be 5."

This photograph of Fred Reinfeld and Bruce Hayden is given in Edward Winter's feature article on Reinfeld.
Does anyone have a good, clear photograph of the plaque prior to the 1998 Keene defilement?
Many thanks.
