iphone chess clock

Here's something to confuse the rule makers - a chess clock application for a touch screen phone.

Should be a challenge getting it to work with the phone turned off!

Would you want to play blitz chess with it? It would be smashed to pieces first game!

... but not the "electronic means of communication" problem. My toothbrush is banned under that one as well

If the WiFi is disabled or out of range, can the Touch still be considered a communications device? Certainly, it can be made back into one but while it is unable to communicate it is arguably not a communications device.

As for the app, it seems a little pricey for an app.

If you have equipment capable of receiving a television signal, even if you don't have a television set, you need a television licence.

In the same way, the iPod Touch can be used as a communications device, even if you can't use it for that at the time, so the laws would probably already cover it.

True but if you disable a TV's ability to receive a signal then it's no longer "Equipment capable of receiving a television signal". I guess the analogy for a Touch would be to open it up and remove the Broadcom chip. Probably not a good idea. :)

Similarly, is a mobile phone covered by the rules if it doesn't have a SIM card in it (assuming its an old one with no Bluetooth or other communications capability)?

Most likely, if it rings you will still lose the game regardless of its accessability.
