Saturday, February 28th saw the completion of four EPSCA (English Primary Schools Chess Association) Inter-Association Zonals for the U9 age category.
These were the Midlands, North, South East and South West zonals.
304 U9 children and 22 teams took part in events in
Birmingham, Birkenhead, Chelmsford and Winchester
providing 12 qualifiers for the Major Finals in Coventry and 10 qualifiers for the Minor finals also in Coventry.

("Association" originally translated to county and now includes regions not recognised as counties).
Some kind of rating record was set in that the results of all the games played in all of the zonals were submitted for rating between the end of the events and the end of February. All of the children without ECF rating IDs at the beginning of the days events had new ratings IDs before the end of the day.
