How did this happen?

Post by John Upham » Tue Jun 16, 2026 5:33 pm

I played a part game on chess.com with the Black pieces as follows:

Being somewhat naive I assumed that this was a Caro Kann, Exchange Variation.

However, chess.com wants to call it:

Indian Game: Spielmann-Indian Variation (!)

I know chess.com concocts bizarre new names for openings we all know as something else but how on earth did it come up with Indian Game?

I suppose it's because 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 c5 (the Spielmann-Indian Variation) 3.e3 cxd4 4.exd4 d5 transposes.
