Black isn't winning now though. Bet there was something better than Ne5

I have the impression that the clocks are not working alongside the boards in many cases - quite a few people seem to have no time, while their opponents have between half an hour or even the full one hour and 40!
obviously in David Howell's case, the clock is right ....

Interesting ending now in Howell - Hawkins, good chances for White? Maybe the attack wasn't quite as devastating as it looked, unless 20. Nf7 was an improvement.

So why did he take on f3? I didn't think he needed to do that.

Re: British Championships 2012 - Games
Maybe he was worried about 30... f5 31. Kg2 , when after the recapture on f3 with the king White can then play e4 dissolving the isolated pawns. Not that that's necessarily anything to be worried about. I can't think of another reason anyway.JustinHorton wrote:So why did he take on f3? I didn't think he needed to do that.
Edit: although that is complete nonsense as ...Kg7 traps the bishop
Second edit: ah, maybe i have it - 30... f5 31. e4! Perhaps.

Re: British Championships 2012 - Games
I imagine I could find a way to lose with black against Howell, probably connected with the passed h-pawn. But we are expecting Hawkins to hold surely?
Given its now historic, the engine prefers black after nf7, it deals with ng5 by swapping rooks and playing qe7. one point being that nh7 is met, not by qh7??, but the very cold blooded kg7, when white has to liquidate to a position where the piece is a bit better than the three pawns.

Any views on board 1? Looks very Arkellesque to me!
Re: British Championships 2012 - Games
It looks really good for white to me, which I suspect means I'm underestimating blacks play. But I really don't see anything activeSimon Brown wrote:Any views on board 1? Looks very Arkellesque to me!

I'm not sure it's so simple to hold.Paul Cooksey wrote:I imagine I could find a way to lose with black against Howell, probably connected with the passed h-pawn. But we are expecting Hawkins to hold surely?

Yes, I missed that. Are the connected passed pawns going to win that for White?Simon Ansell wrote:Second edit: ah, maybe i have it - 30... f5 31. e4! Perhaps.

Black's position looks a bit grotty, doesn't it? But he isn't completely tied in knots either. Arkell must have a decent chance, particularly given the clock situation.Paul Cooksey wrote:It looks really good for white to me, which I suspect means I'm underestimating blacks play. guess who doesn't play with increments ...Jonathan Rogers wrote:I have the impression that the clocks are not working alongside the boards in many cases - quite a few people seem to have no time, while their opponents have between half an hour or even the full one hour and 40!
obviously in David Howell's case, the clock is right ....
how many of us would have found 29 Bxa6 to get the pawn back in kanwal's game (board 24 or so)?
Re: British Championships 2012 - Games
I'm sure you are right it is not simple, but I was finding hard to find a plan for white without g4, when the pawn chain starts to look weak.Simon Ansell wrote:I'm not sure it's so simple to hold.Paul Cooksey wrote:I imagine I could find a way to lose with black against Howell, probably connected with the passed h-pawn. I suspect Howell is trying to do nothing before the time control, then will have a long think until he is playing on the increment again.
