Re: Request to temporarily suspend the forum
Neville is one of the good guys in my opinion so I allowed the change, all back to normal now.
Cheers

"Neville is one of the good guys in my opinion..."
So you have favourites. I thought so.
I had to sit and have my tea on my live kitchen table with what
I was eating being transmitted to the whole world and nothing was closed down.
(Mince and tatties, it's always mince and tatties on a Tuesday.)
Ah....
I've re-read the request.
Now I see it.
We were asked to stop posting and follow the game.
Not following the game and posting/arguing was a sign of disrespect.
I never posted during the game (I was out buying the mince and tatties)
But I bet others did. Go get them Carl.
I played through the game (after my tea) does that put me among the favourites.
Merciless play.
Picks up the pinned piece, good build up to that, Black had to let the exchange go.
White then switches focus to the g6 pawn.
A. Kalaiyalahan - O. Badelka
Gives us a clear heads up next time.
I'll take the day off work and follow the game, I may even skip tea.
Especially if it's on a Tuesday, I'm fed up with mince and tatties.
Wednesday is Spag-Bog day (mince and noodles.)
Thursday is Lasagne (mince with with a chess topping)
Friday is Shepherds Pie (Mince with a potato topping)
Saturday I go to the football and have a mince pie.
(good game mate. Well done.)

Carl - thanks for agreeing to my unusual request yesterday.
Geoff - are you sure it is not sour grapes as all the England - Scotland matches at Budva went England's way?

Neville, I don't see any sour grapes in Geoff''s post, why would there be, he is English after all.

Peter, do you really have no self control or awareness? I wasn't entirely convinced the decision was justified, but it did little harm. You have twice posted the same point that 'clever PDW' does what he pleases'.

Re: Request to temporarily suspend the forum
In response to some of the comments yesterday and today
I have been told that by PM that Ali Roy beat Amy Hoare.

I was serious in my desire to direct everyone's attention that a big match was in progress. I was not seriously expecting the whole forum to be closed down, and Carl's solution of highlighting this thread was the best solution.Andrew Bak wrote:Is this serious?!
An ideal response.David Sedgwick wrote:During this afternoon I shall be:
1. Writing my long overdue Report for Council (Sorry, everyone.)
2. Keeping an eye on the Forum.
3. Keeping an eye on the game.
I'm not the most technocompetent of people, but I know how to open more than one window on my computer at the same time.
My request was a last minute idea which had to be completed before the game started, and I did not consider adding the link. Something to bear in mind for the next request.PeterTurland wrote:A link to watch the girl, would make more sense than your request!
In 1993 newsgroups like alt.rec.games.chess was getting more popular on the internet. I knew of its existence but rarely browsed it.Jonathan Rogers wrote:I'll risk incurring Neville's wrath by posting here (see other thread. My word Neville, what would you have said in 1993, if we had an internet and English Chess Forum back then?)
Maybe I should have used a smiley. Geoff is this forum's most humorous poster as well as Scotland's most prolific. Many years ago I posted something on the Chess Scotland forum, and Geoff told he that Englishmen were not allowed to post there. ;Andy McCulloch wrote:Neville, I don't see any sour grapes in Geoff''s post, why would there be, he is English after all.

Neville
In which case I'll modify my remarks - 'a good idea probably not as well executed as it might have been'. Some posters clearly did think you wanted the chess world/forum to shut down for the afternon.

rec.games.chess was the mainstream.Neville Belinfante wrote:In 1993 newsgroups like alt.rec.games.chess was getting more popular on the internet.
Google Groups has it archived. This is what can come up if you search for "BCF"
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searc ... fvH3G9wMkJ
This was posted by Mark Crowther a year or two before he created TWIC.Directors urged to quit in chess row.
Adam Black the BCF Publicity Director yesterday called for the
resignation of BCF President Mr John Poole, and two BCF directors .....
Internal rows between directors are nothing new, indeed there were then more of them so disputes could be more likely.

Ah, usenet Still alive of course if much reduced. Comfortably predating webforums and still a better interface in many ways.
Anyone who thinks that this place has a tendency to wander off topic and/or turn nasty really hasn't seen what it could get like.

Ah yes, usenet. I used to hang around in alt.politics.homosexuality and post there occasionally. That place was not for the faint-hearted.
Re: Request to temporarily suspend the forum
rec.games.chess has been long washed up.
But rec.games.chess.politics continues to thrive
I just pulled down ten years' worth of headers (145,000), mainly describing threats of violence, actual violence, or litigation arising from acts between chess players, violent, non-violent or otherwise. A colossal number of posts continue in the name of one notorious obsessive, Samuel H. Sloan

Hi Neville,
As usual I'm just talking mince.
Sour Grapes? That is what I get on a Sunday.
