Chess Apps
I just moved with the times, and gone from Blackberry to Android.
I have a nice new samsung galaxy s4. I'm trying to work out how to do basic stuff with it atm, but once I'm done I'd like to add chess apps. Any recommendations? I'm particularly thinking of tactics trainers, chess engines, online play and something to follow the world championship match with.

ChessBase Online for Android. It is astounding, for this small sum.

As suggested on this thread (and also, FWIW, elsewhere on this forum) there is Droidfish (which comes with the Stockfish 4 engine) and the WCC app. As an alternative to ChessBase (which costs), there is 'Scid on the go' (which is free).

There are some chess clock apps as well, for ad hoc games of Blitz. These exploit the touch screen. I've seen them in use in the 4NCL bar. You might expect there to be 10 second buzzer out there somewhere for Lightning.

Yes, as far as I am aware Droidfish is the best option for a free engine. It runs Stockfish (2800 elo) and is user friendly. Something like Shredder for Android will cost a few pounds, be (only!) around 2500 elo, but have loads more features.stevencarr wrote:Droidfish

Yes, I also recommend Stockfish.
