I once read that the precise value of the pieces (in the opinon of the writer who was a GM) was pawn 1. Bishop 3 + 3/4 Knight 3 + 1/2 Rook 5 Queen 9 1/2 this puts the bishop slightly ahead of the old steed if we were to put the pieces in a vacuum.
Must admit I am warming to Knights more now than when I had not long learned the rules. Back then I think I preferred the whizzy bishop, long diagonals and pinning knights to monarchs
The Bishop and Knight relationship is the most interesting in chess as it’s the only time that 2 completely different pieces are regarded as equal. All other fair exchanges are like for like in movement terms.
