Some fifteen years ago, some quite strong (190+ plus) players played quiz machines for a living, going round all the various pubs in neighbouring counties where the "right" machines were known to be installed.

Not me, if only because I didn't drive - to go back to another well worn cliche about chess players ...

And because I probably wouldn't have handled some of the landlords very well :o

Mhm Ms Coren is quite good at self promotion.

I bet she makes at least as much for endorsing PokerStars as she does playing poker. That's another source of income for the Poker player- referrals. Bit hard for someone getting any commission for joining a chess club ;). Have posted a bit on my blog about it- because to be honest although I have a lot more to learn about poker, I can quite see me playing no chess this season and spending that time on poker instead. It's easier than chess and pretty easy money overall really.

I work for Middlesex University (www.mdx.ac.uk) in the Law Department at Hendon Campus as an administrator. Partly I'm here because I was a mature student at Tottenham (BA Writing) and then Trent Park (MA Creative Writing), but also I'm still here because I can walk to work in 10 minutes through the local park ;-)

I'm a commercial paralegal for a large electronics company, and in my spare time the reincarnation of Mikhail Tal (I wish!)

So do I! (but not for a living unfortunately) I am part of a team sadly entitled Gem Hadar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jem%27Hadar) (the choice of G is to avoid law suits!) comprising Ken & Christine Coates, Colin Purdon plus irregulars such as Peter Tart and Andrew Martin.

We regularly annoy the locals in

The Cricketers, Yateley
The Dog & Partridge, Yateley
The Thatched Cottage, Cove

Some of the above team was part of an unsuccessful Eggheads team called Camberley Chess Club.

This was Ken & Christine, Julien Shepley, Paul Sloane and Steve Harley. I suffered from both a cold and stage fright!

Like Keith Arkell, I never fit those boxes on such enquiries.
Am I retired? I may let you know later this year when I resume playing poker.
2007 I know I made money from the game. But that was because I won £3500 in two days. Is that really professional? I am no Korchnoi, nor Doyle Brunson who are both older than me and still playing profitably.
I should make more money from chess organisation next year than the negligible sum this year. I wonder how many people realise none of us get any fees for the British or Hastings?
I had been disemployed since 1979, a term never used.
