Another year another season in chess, another decline in ratings, another series of loses to people playing like computers.

the point of my initial thread was that i have had 30 seasons of static or declining ratings and yet i still look ever hopefull they will double overnight.

it must be nice to look t youre rating in the 2000+ region and think i could get this higher with good play, i am incredibly envious of such people

I suspect we can deduce that it isn't without taking the trouble of attempting to translate it.
Can we redirect these posts to /dev/null please Carl?

Apart from those quibbles it's not far off.

The point i make about a chess failure like myself who gets excited if his non-entity rating goes up from 1578 to 1582, i am just writing an ode to such a person as i am he.

We are all failures in chess. Even Magnus will probably feel such, if he doesn't reach 2900, and I don't think he will.
It's just a question of scale.

It is all about enjoying the game and not the rating (speaking as someone who would be mortified when he goes under 1800 but will keep on playing).

You needn't be; we spend most of the time being envious of titled players. (Not of the fact FIDE sold them a single square on a chessboard in Scotland with the title "Master" attached, but of the fact they can move the pieces better than us

)

The relationship between log(rank) and rating is perfectly linear until you get to the world top 20. The top 20 are underrated. Magnus is overrated for the world top 20, but underrated by log(rank). So it's likely that if you allowed computers to compete against humans, Magnus would break 2900 without getting any better at chess.

We need an oldie to swing in at the top and make us all feel better basically.
