It's difficult to know what else to say without making the answer obvious, let's just say he's a well known character/englishman and leave it at that but if you were aware of his movements, certainly the clue regarding occupation probably gives it away.
Still no "takers" here, I see.
* "Decade" suggests to me the 1930s, when the great depression had its worst effects (although it began late in 1929).
* The black horse of The Revelation carried the rider Famine; it's also the logo of Lloyds Bank; plus there's a whole Dan Brown novel's worth of interpretations with mystic/occult significance.
* The name Conway appears to have the meaning "holy river and hound of the plain" (which is a lot to pack into just six letters).
* And the list of chess historians put up by Wikipedia is a pretty small one; however, nothing obvious jumps out from it which relates clearly to any of the above.
