That headcount is well short of the number claimed by chess.com. For that matter it's well short of the 600 million players claimed from time to time. The London-listed company operates as the official commercial partner of FIDE. Hardly anyone pays attention to anything when they are on the tube, especially at peak times.John Townsend wrote: ↑Wed May 27, 2026 11:59 amI like the aim of this and its message "Chess Is Very Good For You", and I wish it every success. My only reservation is that, among things that are very good for you, the London underground might not be too prominent. From a health angle, I suspect London buses would be a better choice for any future campaigns. That would allow the advertisers the chance to rescue people de profundis.
I should imagine they just count the number of accounts that have been registered. Depending on how they handle duplicate, closed and inactive accounts their count could be an over estimate. It's still a more reliable measure than getting a market research organisation to ask a few people whether they "play chess" and then extrapolating to a global total.MJMcCready wrote: ↑Tue Jun 23, 2026 10:36 amWhere do they get these figures from. Isn't that true for just about everything tbf.MJMcCready wrote: ↑Tue Jun 23, 2026 10:38 amAnd anyway, they got the slogan wrong, it should be 'Chess can be very good for you but also very bad too.'
