I'm surprised his rating hasn't increased by more in all of this.
True glory lies in doing what deserves to be written; in writing what deserves to be read.

Hmm I wonder whether he entered and once the organisers realised who he was they took him off the list? The Susan Polgar site mentioned by Sean appears to be the only source of the story and perhaps she set up a Google alert or something similar as there are no other details. The link that she gives is to the chess results server http://chess-results.com/tnr81987.aspx He's not on there but one must assume he was at some point. Mick's link to the official site also confirms he's certainly not on the list now so perhaps he's been "managed away". What a shame I was looking forward to that as journalist Tim Spanton is playing by the looks of it and might have got more details for this ongoing saga.

It might be just a joke, I suspect you can enter any name into the online entry form... like when at university someone enters for an exam the name of a famous person just for the fun of listening to the teacher calling for him...Chris Rice wrote:Hmm I wonder whether he entered and once the organisers realised who he was they took him off the list? He makes some valid points about existing parallels, mentioning browsing the bookstall during play, speaking to other players or spectators and asking the match captain for permission to offer a draw when the captain is aware of the current position on the board.Mick Norris wrote: Interesting
Browsing the bookstall and consulting other players during play are already against the Laws of Chess.

He definitely has a point asking why certain forms of cheating (such as pre-arranged draws) have been tolerated for so long and hoping that those wont be forgotten in the upcoming anti-cheating rules.

Isn't the team captain allowed to inform a player that (eg) a draw would be enough to win the match? Re the point by Paolo, I suppose the simple answer is that some forms of "cheating" are looked on more harshly than others - as one might expect, perhaps?

That's allowed. The example he gave was where a player asked for permission to seek a draw where he had a choice of continuations, one was to take a repetition and the other was to play a speculative sacrifice. The implication was that the player was asking for advice on the position from the captain.Matt Mackenzie wrote: Isn't the team captain allowed to inform a player that (eg) a draw would be enough to win the match? The match detailschessvibes wrote:During the Azerbaijan-Poland match at the last Olympiad, before making a move, my opponent asked his captain whether to offer a draw. It was before his 26th move. It was round 9, so everybody knew that the rules of the Olympiad didn't even allow a draw offer before move 30.
"Coincidentally" my opponent had two possibilities: to keep playing an unclear balanced position or to sacrifice a rook and finish a game with a perpetual check instantly.
In my opinion it was an obvious attempt of cheating (Problem 3: The use of the third party help during a game).

There's an obvious problem of interpreting these actions as asking a match captain whether you need to play for a win is presumably legitimate.
It was the sacrifice that lead to the instant draw and the game just continued otherwise.
