Odd choice really, he seemed to be well prepared as White but now he's using lots of time. Still, anything can happen at these time controls.

I'd much prefer Gawain's position out of the opening in a rapid game. Don't think in real terms his position is better, but two bishops and a big centre in return for a pawn seems a good deal at this time limit.

That third link includes something on the time default by Jorge Cori (and a rejected appeal), and a picture of Gawain and his opponent. It seems Cori misheard the start time as 18:50 rather than the correct 18:15. An expensive $500 appeal, but probably worth it given the prize money at stake.

It's only 128 players, so small to medium in comparison with many British events. You might need loads of arbiters though, particularly for the rapid play and Blitz playoffs. The principal barrier would be the million or so you would need in prize money, accommodation costs and payments to FIDE and its Board members.

What added to the confusion is the way Chief Arbiter Ignatius Leong dealt with the breaks: sometimes it was ten minutes between games, sometimes fifteen, and once even twenty-five, when he needed to speak with the Appeals Committee! He also announced the times in different ways, and they were not always very clear, even to us.
