European Club Cup

Post by Jonathan Rogers » Sat Oct 19, 2013 10:53 pm

This seven round event starts in Rhodes tomorrow. The three English representatives are Barbican 4NCL (accepting nomination for the first time since 2008), White Rose (who have played every year since 2009) and Jutes of Kent (making their second appearance, after enjoying Simon Williams' win over Gelfand last year; also, sadly, their last appearance since they have not re-entered 4NCL this season).

None of the three English teams are at full strength and all are in the second half of the draw. If you want to glance in horror at the strength of the top teams, you may do so here:

Jutes and Barbican are both thrown into the fire in the first round. Jutes play second seed Malachite, for whom Bologan (2670) is listed at board eight. They must decide which of their top three players (Grischuk, Karjakin or Morozevich) should play S K Williams. (Matches are over six boards, and each team may nominate up to eight players). Barbican only have it marginally easier, playing third seeds St Petersburg who have only a 2651 player on board eight.

If the live games are working at all, both these English teams should be playing on them. Hopefully, not temporarily (we must hope). The link is here:

Gulp :!: Vos morituri estis, nos salutamus (or somesuch!)

Rhodes is nice though; Lindos, especially (or was)

All of these incredibly strong teams are being underwritten by generous sponsorship. What we should be dwelling on is why we are failing to get sponsors in English chess; we couldn't even field a national women's team in the European Team championships.

That really was shameful, but of course, another topic.

There has been some success at achieving sponsorship/funding for under-18 chess but in the over-18 category it has been dismal (in the last few years) to the point of embarrassment.
Of course some 4NCL teams provided conditions/payments for the professional players.

It is almost "not the done thing" to promote and market adult chess.

Chess clubs/groups/leagues/associations are keen to advertise their junior successes but have lost the ability (or maybe desire) to discuss adult or senior successes.

The failure to fund a women's team was pitiful.

Simon Williams (Jutes of Kent) plays Sergey Karjakin (2762)

John Cox of this forum (Barbican) plays Lenier Dominguez Perez (2753)

Richard Palliser (White Rose) has it easier against Andrey Zhigalko (2615) of Minsk.

Good fortune to our brave matadors, they'll need it.

Sorry if I've missed it somewhere in one of the posts, but what time do the games start today?

The supposed start is 15.00 Greece time, which is two hours ahead of us, but the games don't appear to have started yet

I think Simon Williams, Ezra Kirk, and Chris Dorrington have the best chances of getting anything out of their games.

According to ChessBomb John Naylor has already lost. Either the display's wrong or its that zero- time default nonsense.

Peter Gayson's game is also showing as 0-1 with no moves played

It is indeed zero tolerance. Also, draws before move 40 are not allowed, so I suppose the games which we needlessly miss altogether might be compensated for by the fact that the others are played out!

At least that would be the spectator's perspective. The Barbican players - and the majority of the players in all teams, I assume - were not too happy with either rule!

Now Mark Ferguson is recorded as having lost, in a level position. Mobile phone, then? I find that very hard to believe, but can't think what else. There is no shortage of trouble with the arbitration at these events though, so maybe it is something else. :(

10 minutes later edit: Fortunately the game has just restarted! Maybe the organisers thought his mobile had gone off, tried to default him, and then recognised their error? Bl£££dy hell though, we can do without that sort of distraction when trying to compete with 2700s ...

The other English defaults stand, unfortunately.
