Well Ivanov, at least, hasn't actually been nailed for anything more objectionable than a refusal to remove a shoe in contravension to the ad hoc rules imposed by one tournament.

That's hardly a valid reason to support a lifetime ban! Or even really anything other than throwing him out of the competition in question.

Even if no money considered, a lifetime ban from someones major leisure activity isn't a trivial matter.

Can't remember saying anything about a lifetime ban but a ban of some sort would be a start. for Ivanov it's just the same as failing to take drug tests (Troicki and Cilic in tennis) are the two latest examples) when asked to. In athletics I think its a mandatory 2 year ban for a first offence which seems reasonable.

Because athletics is (very) organised about this, yes you can do that. Chess isn't at all organised yet - this was all formally driven by one tournament - so you have to be cautious. See the PCA stuff above for what'll hopefully happen.

The Russian player who was expelled from the Bulgarian tournament continues to play in FIDE rated events in Russia.

The German IM who was caught with the vibrating phone in Dortmund doesn't seem to have played since. Indeed a German news report suggests he is under police investigation for fraud. A German GM accused of engine use on his mobile got a ban overturned. The German FM who admitted cheating in his last round game in the German Championships hasn't played since.

Cheating at chess can be a criminal matter, particularly if the cheating allows access to worthwhile prize money. Precedents elsewhere are the coughing on "Millionaire" and the Cricket incident fixing cases.

I agree largely with what you say Roger. Let me bring people up to date on the German player, Jens Kotainy, as its quite interesting.

As I understand it on the 25 September 2013 the German Chess Federation found Kotainy, not not guilty (its not a typo!), but no sanction. The reason was that each tourney organiser has to sign a treaty with each participant of a tourney which accept the rules of the German Chess Federation. Since this (Dortmund) was a private tourney and the tourney organiser did not do this, the German Chess Federation decided it had no basis for any action.

Subsequently the Ethics Commission for FIDE was informed about this case and they will have to decide separately if they will take any action regarding whether Kotainy should be banned/suspended from playing
from "C-Kader" (German national C-team, essentially the Youth team).

Andy Howie wrote:A technical investigation I have been doing at work recently got me thinking. I bet when they have been using signal blockers and scanners, they are using 2.4 GHz and 5GHz, no one has checked the 60GHz band which is fairly new. It is very fast but short ranged so would be perfect. Devices already exist.
Anything from about 1MHz (medium wave ) to 400 THz (infrared - limited to line of sight ) and even modulated ultrasound can be used.

Devices already exist for ultrasound and most of the above frequencies.

A claim by the organisers that they have blocked or scanned for all possible illicit communications is pure P. R.

All you can do is hope that cheaters are less ingenious than organisers.

Watching out for suspicious results and behaviour is still the best way of catching cheaters.

Typical and pathetic. The Germans should be able to work out for themselves whether Kotainy is fit to play in their own youth team.

Rd 4 in the Navalmoral de la Mata tournament in Spain and after beating the Argentinian GM Daniel Campora in Rd 3 Borislav Ivanov is leading on 3/3 and up next he is Black v Armenian GM Karen Grigoryan (2604). This will be a severe test for his new socks.

...and now he's beaten Grigoryan to reach 4/4. I'm amazed that first, he was allowed to compete, second, that there hasn't been a mass refusal to play him, and most of all, third, that he seems to have worked out a new method which doesn't involve his shoes. At least, I assume that somebody at the tournament has inspected his feet by now.

The round 3 game against Campora is online (sorry my IT skills are not up to printing it out). I don't know how it correlates with Houdini/Stockfish, but it's a smooth, controlled win where the GM looks outclassed:

Next up at 5pm this afternoon (the tournament is a 7-round rapidplay ending tomorrow) is GM Manuel Perez Candelario (2568).

The mystery deepens.....

The tournament director did apparently subject Ivanov to anti-cheating measures. He had a conversation with him before the tournament started and as a result Ivanov is not allowed to stand up in the room while his game is in progress or go to the WC alone.

They have obviously refined their method. The majority of the moves are Houdini's first choice, but on a handful of occasions they choose the 3rd or 4th choice move - however never making a bad move or being worse. It is exactly the pattern you would expect from someone cheating and trying to avoid detection.

I thought the plan to control the d4 square was quite amusing. Having got the Knight and Bishop onto e5 and f4, first the Bishop came back to e3, then the Knight to f3, allowing the Bishop to return to f4. Computer thinking, or an imaginative idea?
