Waterloo Sunset, about London Waterloo or Waterloo Bridge? Talking of lyrics, I've seen threads on chess in films, on TV and in print, but what about chess in musical lyrics? Is there a thread on that somewhere on the forum? Or is chess not really something that gives itself to lyrical expression?

Thanks Peter

I reckon "over the top" might be another way to describe it. But it was just a bit of an indulgence and exercise in creative and fun writing. Something a bit different, with a view to bringing in a bit of light relief hopefully.

Well I guess it depends on who you ask, open to interpretation, as I think the writer has said different things at different times, but for me it conjures up real memories of the first time I seen Waterloo Station and yes Waterloo bridge too.

Key lines being;

"Terry meets julie, waterloo station"

"Millions of people swarming like flies round waterloo underground"

"As long as I gaze on waterloo sunset
I am in paradise"

So regardless of what the actual intent, it has become associated with London and both Waterloo Station and Waterloo Bridge. and London at it's best generally.

One Night In Bangkok; Comes to mind - a great little tune with lyrics that work quite well.

Colm Daly>... To conclude [and not before time I hear you say] this whole drama has all the ingredients for a play, maybe even a West End production, maybe on Broadway? A musical, as mapped out, in part, above?

What should the title of this drama be?

Quote: "Emergency Board Meeting Draft Minutes"

Is certainly not going to cut it.

How about "The Twilight Zone Of English Chess"

Nah doesn't have the right ring to it really. Ah well, I am open to suggestions.

Maybe just

"Knights In Light Satin Sheets" - any old excuse to include another classic from another great English band from the 60s http://youtu.be/9muzyOd4Lh8<

Colm, great pasting & posting.

Now for a title, how about - A Connected Yankee in Prince Nigel's Court!?

Just to complete the Kinks playlist on a more sombre note -

There's a crack up in the ceiling,
And the kitchen sink is leaking.
Out of work and got no money,
A Sunday joint of bread and honey.

What are we living for?
Two-roomed apartment on the second floor.
No money coming in,
The rent collector's knocking, trying to get in.

We are strictly second class,
We don't understand,
(Dead end!)
Why we should be on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
People are living on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
Gonna die on dead end street.

Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)

On a cold and frosty morning,
Wipe my eyes and stop me yawning.
And my feet are nearly frozen,
Boil the tea and put some toast on.

What are we living for?
Two-roomed apartment on the second floor.
No chance to emigrate,
I'm deep in debt and now it's much too late.

We both want to work so hard,
We can't get the chance,
(Dead end!)
People live on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
People are dying on dead end street.
(Dead end!)
Gonna die on dead end street.

Dead end street (yeah)
Dead end street (yeah)

I could have chosen A Complicated Life but it's too personal.
The more sociable dirge above will just have to do.
Toodle-oo!

Yes indeed, how could I overlook Dead End Street.

Colm, you probably missed it because you are an optimistic pessimist - like Em. Lasker.
But, never mind, what about "A Connected Yankee in the Court of Prince Nigel"?

Better title than anything I have suggested so far, but I fear the "Court of Prince Nigel" may have evaporated and perhaps it is now more a case of something is rotten in the state of Denmark?

I also don't think Andrew could claim to be anything like a true blue Yankee. Nigel may have been spot on when he used the word interloper, but then to be fair, am I not also such an interloper on this forum.

As far as a title goes I am sort of leaning towards something like:

That Fool On The Hill and The Devil Within - It all started with an ECF Sin

"That Fool On The Hill and The Devil Within - It all started with an ECF Sin..."

Yes, that's a better title - I added the ellipsis to indicate an ongoing drama that will run and run. (All the way to Tromso in the autumn.)

Let me get this straight, Colm.

We all know who the innocent 'fool' is, but let's call him Adam to complete the coming analogy.
I think I know that the original sin is, as always, temptation.
The ECF Council is then Eve - full of feminine curiosity.
It's 'The Devil' I am having trouble believing in as the main culprit, though.
If Andrew is one playing the part of the tempter, as it seems it must be, then he was only playing himself.
There is nothing evil in that, or is there?

Since you wrote above about "crap players" (and I freely admit to being one myself, par excellence) having a pop at 'Adam' for being naïve I have to point out that the same applies to those who have a pop at someone for being a successful businessman. Of course, like me, the poppers will say it is not so and that they are not popping subjectively or out of envy - to try and lay the high and mighty low. Rather, they do it to try to temper the excesses of their idols.

Edit: And, Colm, please do not feel you are an isolated 'interloper' on the forum comparable to Andrew in the ECF, or Israel in Egypt. The forum has had Italians, at least one Swede and others from abroad - including a Roumanian in Singapore.

Yes, forthwith. I believe his position is completely untenable following the revelations about his hidden dealings with the FIDE president. I also find it incomprehensible that he did not feel obliged to resign at or after the ECF Board meeting in February.

Welcome to the party, Terry.
You're a little late and the guest of dishonour has already left.
He's on his way to the ECU, possibly with the ECF's blessing.
I think he remains a member of the latter gentlemen's club with some white/blackballing options.

Something of a coup for the Irish Chess Union:

"The ICU Executive is honoured to be able to announce that Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland, has generously agreed to be the Patron of the ICU. This is a new position which we have created specifically to accord with President Higgins' wish to be associated with the ICU, as the body responsible for running chess in Ireland. We are most flattered that President Higgins has agreed to occupy this honorary position."

Who could the ECF find of similar stature? George Osborne plays chess but.....

Rachel Reeves would be the obvious choice, no?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Not really, Justin, any serving politician is too busy to do the position any justice and would just create division. Why not get a minor royal - they are more amenable to all except a few rabid republicans and are above politics.

No they're not, and no they're not.

Incidentally , do you imagine that President Higgins doesn't do anything else with his time?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."
