(I have the horrible feeling I have to explain that he was saying it wasn't Domingo or Carreras, but Pavarotti singing the lead.)
I have noticed with some chess players that even if they stay quiet in the playing room, as soon as they're half a picometre outside it, they speak like Brian Blessed and seem oblivious to the fact that noise carries in normal atmospheric conditions. I have also encountered those who "shush" at the sound of an ant walking across a carpet, then have loud conversations as soon as they've finished.
