Being beaten by your mobile phone

Post by stevencarr » Mon Jun 09, 2014 9:45 am

A few years ago, I used to joke that people would be beaten by their phone.

But now that Stockfish is on Android, even Carlsen would struggle against his phone.

Such is the pace of technology....

I’m currently addicted to a program called Dr Chess on my new IPhone (you play online against other players) It reminds me very much of the old MSN chess on zone.com, which I’ve never been able to get running on a windows vista or 8 PC (I had a ridiculously high rating on there, something like 2700).

Problem with Dr Chess is, you move into a no signal area for half a second, it disconnects you, and you loose the game - quite literally beaten by your phone - it happened this morning on the bus to work as I was about to deliver mate on the black side of a French :(

What happens if it rings during a game :?:

Quickly press the call end, finish off and ring the caller back later - it doesn’t go down too well with the missus

Just getting some players who actually know some Chess theory now (moved up from class E to class A over the weekend). Most games were going 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Qf6 or something.

The irony: with Dr Chess if your phone gets disconnected from the network, then you lose; in real life chess, if your phone gets connected to the network (and exchanges data or you get a call) then you lose.
I doubt we'll ever get Vodafone to sponsor a chess tournament!

Will Stephen Hawking have to be banned from playing chess forever?
