Four players not from the player's own federation. Three players not from the host federation.
Who is the host federation in this case then? Since if it is Wales, (or the Welsh Chess Union(?)) then that requirement is easily satisfied.

Just realised that I may have mis-interpreted this, does Jack mean:

Four players not from the player's own federation AND three players not from the host federation

OR

Four players not from the player's own federation OR three players not from the host federation?

I've seen players under estimate the time needed to play the move and press the clock. I've also watched GMs using the thinking time to the limit and always making it, for several moves running.

Obviously in a non increment quick-play finish you may not have any choice, but I've preferred to "live on the 30 second increment" with around a two minute solvency margin. If you have a ten or fifteen second increment, I'm undecided. In the limited number of events where this time control has applied, I've treated it as a blitz finish but with occasional time to reflect and take stock.

I rather suspect the host Federation is regarded as ENG. It's the ECF imposing membership requirements rather the WCU.

It's Jack's interpretation that Hawkins needs to play another player who isn't ENG. I don't think it matters whether the tournament is reported by the WCU or the ECF. This is where the deliberate or accidental boycott by the top Scottish, Welsh and Irish players can cause problems.

It's worth bearing in mind for potential chess tourists that there's a 20 player rule. So if you enter a foreign Open tournament, you can count towards the 20 "not from host Federation" even if unlikely to meet any Norm seekers. If the organisers agree, it's cheaper to pay the entry fee on arrival rather than incur the charges of international banking systems. The point being that every non local tourist they attract can reduce the need to pay conditions to a foreign star to make the Norms work.

It's an AND: Hawkins needs to meet at least three non-Welsh opponents (which he's already done) and four non-English opponents (which he hasn't; he needs one more).

The host federation is Wales because the tournament is taking place in Wales.

No one told the FIDE website though
http://ratings.fide.com/tournament_list ... ountry=ENG

With many of the 5 day events FIDE rated, it's a long list.

To be strictly accurate, this is:
20 not from the host federation, not all from the same federation
of whom at least 10 are IMs or GMs.

(This rule means that the 4NCL, for example, is an event where you can gain a norm without meeting the normal foreigner requirements. My second IM norm used this ability.)

So in budgeting terms someone has to pay for 10 titled players and hope to attract 10 diverse tourists.

I think that's incorrect.

The British Championships are being held in Wales by agreement with the Welsh Chess Union.

However, the Championships are organised by the ECF (it says so on the entry form). The ECF collects the entry fees. The ECF is responsible for registering the event with FIDE (see Roger's post), doing the FIDE rating and paying the dues to FIDE.

The British Championship is designated by England as the national championship exempt from the normal foreigner requirements for title norm purposes (no help to Jonathan Hawkins).

I'd be very surprised if that doesn't make England the host Federation within the meaning of the FIDE Title Regulations.

(I await Nick Faulks coming on to tell me that I'm wrong.)

I'll take a punt at predicting the results today. If I can get 50% I'll be pretty chuffed.

Board 3 draw.
Board 4 Howell win.
Board 5 Yang- Fan win.
Board 6 draw.
Board 7 Fernandez win.
Board 8 Arkell win.
Board 9 Tan win.
Board 10 Lewis win.
Board 11 draw.
Board 12 McPhillips win.
Board 13 Brown win.
Board 14 Mason win.
Board 15 draw.
Board 16 draw.
Board 17 Haria win.
Board 18 Hill win.
Board 19 draw.
Board 20 draw.
Board 21 Hackner win.
Board 22 Villiers win.
Board 23 draw.
Board 24 Brown win.
Board 25 draw.
Board 26 Wager win.
Board 27 Clancy win.
Board 28 Lenier win.

The top board clash is Simon Williams against Jonathan Hawkins. Given that he is in the sole lead with half a point, I'm guessing Hawkins would be happy with a draw as Black. Should Williams go for a win, or would he be happy with a draw as well. I'm guessing from his style that he will go for a win, but if he overpresses, that could see Williams 1.5 points behind. Tricky one!

(Ah, Ben, you don't think Jack can down David Howell? 8) )

Been rather a traitor to several team- mates/ others I should be supporting. The list of people I hope will win would be somewhat different to the list I think will, with Jack being very much top of the former.

Afternoon all

I predict that Yang- Fan Zhou will beat Matthew Wadsworth. I still feel that Yang Fan will win more games in the last half of the event.

Well it is prefect weather for a barbecue which i shall be lighting later at 6.15 pm. I will be cooking chicken in an orange and thyme marinade shame none of you lot will ever get to taste it

I expect we shall see David match Jack's speed of play, but we'll have to be patient as it won't be until he's got about a minute left.

The 'hope they win but don't think they will' list would be Jack Rudd, James Jackson, Robert Willmoth, Alan Pleasants, Alex Bullen, John Fraser, and Alan Brusey.
