Got to be worth a try. Assuming the cost structure is essentially fixed, economics would suggest that you might as well try price reductions in areas where there is no demand at the moment - so slashing the prices for FMs is risking very little for the possibility of strengthening the event a bit.IM Jack Rudd wrote:The British would probably be well-served by changing its entry fee structure somewhat. At present, it's £100 for FMs/WFMs, and a grand total of four such players - Jackson, Storey, Tan and Lewis - have entered. (I do not count Waddington because he was a transfer from the Major Open.) It's £200 for untitled players, and 41 such players have entered. Maybe we should do what most international opens do, and have entry fees dependent on rating as well as title.

I've never liked that. A national champion should have come first in something, in my view.Mick Norris wrote:Or a real Open with foreign players and the best home player becoming British Champion?

Re: The British itself!
Shouldn't the discussion of possible future changes to the British be spun out to a new thread?
Seems to have started about here:

David Howell late again for the start of round 7, no surprise there!
Re: The British itself!
Hawkins must be happy again - looks like a nice edge with the draw always in hand? - position after 17.Bxf3

Re: The British itself!
I'm not sure Hawkins has any advantage at all (after 33... Ke7).
edit: although 34...Rb4 looks a bit optimistic. 34... Nf8 was natural when 35. Rcd1 can be answered comfortably with 35... Rb6.
Boards 2 and 3 stuck? They were both shaping up to be interesting games :/

Re: The British itself!
If the top 5 boards are drawn, who would Hawkins play in round 8? It would one one of Emms, N. Pert, Hebden, Ward and Howell. Presumably a White seeker from that lot (Hebden or Howell). Though if Emms wins and the others draw, you have to presumably give Emms Black (rather than a third White in a row) and Hawkins would get White.

Re: The British itself!
Isn't Black looking very comfortable on board 1 after 36..Nf8-e6-d4?

Re: The British itself!
White does look very passive on board 1. I'd prefer to be Black here. Wish we knew if there had been any draw offers.
Re: The British itself!
Surprised Hebden didn't play 41...Ne1+. Seems very ambitious to be playing for more then a draw.

Re: The British itself!
Engines now favouring Fernandez, if he can find the right moves. Hebden may have missed the tactics after 43.Ra5, meaning that the Ne1+ move is no longer possible. And, oops, Ward has gone wrong (blundered was too harsh) on board 2 against Howell (amazingly, Ward has less time than Howell!).benedgell wrote:Surprised Hebden didn't play 41...Ne1+. Re: The British itself!
Anyone shed any light on the 11 move white win on bottom board?
