I guess Jonathan would like to draw, but I am not sure that he is really set up to draw with players. I am sure he would do much better against Nick if he just went out and played, but that is much easier said than done.
Nick too is a tricky situation, he has get refocused on the chess, which is never that easy after a double rest day.
I guess it is about a 33% chance for each result. If we are making predictions I'll go for Nick.

I predict David will beat Daniel to get to 7. Daniel likes to have the initiative even at the cost of material, but I think this plays into David's strengths, he will just take the material, soak up the pressure and come through in the end.

Williams - Hebden is another tough game to call, both really need to win, everyone will expect some psychotic attack from Simon, so I'll predict a draw.
I think we'll see a dull draw on board 1, and I'll go for white wins on 2/3.

It would still get registered, and it is only his 3rd GM norm. He's not got any others, has he?
Not according to this

The main problems with getting GM norms are:
Swisses and team events give you very little control over the field faced
GM norm all-play-alls are hard to set up - I think Sean Hewitt did the maths for one once, and decided he couldn't afford to run it.

"I think we could see a bad quality game on board 1 today."

and

"I think we'll see a dull draw on board 1...."

Such gloom and doom. Glad you two are not out there seeking sponosrs for chess.

Jim Hakwins was in Treausre Island written by Robert Louis Stevenson.

On the 28th July 1888 (today is the 28th) Robert set sail onboard the Casco bound for the Marquesas.

You cannot ignore signs like that. It's in the stars that today Hawkins will play a masterpiece.

You can see Jonathan Hawkin's problem from the results Mick Norris gave just above.
He has two fully valid norms, one in the 4NCL and one in the British Championship. In each case they were special events where no foreigners are required and, indeed he only played one in the two events. His third norm MUST have the standard requirement of non-English opponents. That is almost impossible for him to achieve here because there are simply not enough non-English players of high enough standard in the event.

If your prime objective is to get players a GM norm, then it is often best, in an open Swiss, to use Accelerated Pairings.

Geoff,
We saw a top quality game from Nick Pert yesterday, absolutely no mistakes. Although, I predict some errors today, that might make it all the more exciting :)

every now and again Nick tries to surprise people - remember his Albin Counter-Gambit on board one v Jon Parker in Swansea 2006, rd 10? (still a quick draw though  )

Was he really winning all the way through that? What would have happened after Nf6 instead of Nd6?

Doh! I was thinking of the round 7 game. You are talking of the 2-move draw...

Hi JR.

I remember it well.

Hi Mathew.

The 28th of July 1914 was also the day WWI started so we may see some trench warfare.

Pert is nearly an anagram of Trap.

Closed game with lots of background shuffling suddenly Hawkins will send
his troops over the top and win with a treasure of a trap. (trep)

On the anagram theme, Jonathan Hawkins becomes "Haha - twin sank Jon" so that one could go either way.

Move 14 - Isn't Hawkins just killing him?

Yes, I was practically begging for Hawkins to play 14. Nxd5.

However I don't think things are as clear if 14...Bb4+. I can only see that White is a pawn up, assuming best response for Black.
