Nice to hear from you! Do you play much yourself/did you teach Jonathan?

I still think Jonathan is doing well; but no doubt the pressure is on, and I also still expect Howell to win.

Going back to the Hawkins style. My thoughts go back to Blackpool a few years ago - admittedly not the most important tournament, but money was at stake. In the last round Hawkins as Black needed only to draw against Arkell. And what did he do? He stodged, if there is such a word. He played for a draw, and failed. No sign of that here...

Can someone please tell me why 24 g4 wasn't possible? Or even 23 g4?

Hi, thanks for the welcome.

I taught him to play when he was about 7, I don't play much myself, and he was beating me after a few weeks.

He's lived and breathed chess ever since he first learned.

I used to nag at him when he left university to get himself a job/career and leave the chess alone for a while, but all he wanted to do was play. I take it all back now.

Qxh3 and then Qg4+ picks up the e4 bishop

I agree; W's c pawn is looking weak. ... Nd6,Qf7 eventual Ba6 and e5 all create threats

wouldn't black have played Qxh3 and then give an annoying check on g4 (or take on f3 if permitted)?

Surely no early morning G & Ts?

I think the idea was ...Qxh3 gxf5 exf5 and the bishop has to leave the knight undefended.

Sorry I think Jon's is a better idea. I'm three hours ahead of u guys so not so early to go for a vodka & coke

Thanks. I was looking at Nh2 with Bf6 in the air but Nd4 or Qh4 seem to deal with that.

Jonathan, I'm back in the UK to work for a week so no G&Ts just now. But I will be back to Spain on Friday in time for the Olympiad, so assuming the timetable permits my alcoholically assisted analysis will resume.
