What is odd is that, although the news story concentrates on one 8 year old in the World Youjth, there are several such USCF participants of that age.

I had always supposed these and similar stories were down to parents seeking publicity. Otherwise a story that an seven or eight year old is playing in an Under 8 tournament doesn't amount to very much, other than to remind a non-chess audience that international chess exists and can be participated in from a very young age.

...scoring 11 points, is a very good chess player. He won on numerous occasions the
Edinburgh Disabled Congress in the early 80's which was organised by Alastair White.
I was asked to help out and it turned into a lasting friendhip with Derek culminatiing
in me and the delightful Mrs C spending the weekend at Derek's flat on Aintree weekend.

I went down armed with every minor piece of football trivia I could think of.
He got the lot. At the Grand National in the programme was a list of all the previous
winners since the race began. He got all those correct as well.

Yes I watched that. The judges were not impressed though, as the contestant had used bought moulds to make the chocolate chess pieces, rather than creating her own. The lines were clearly visible where the two halves of each piece had been joined together.

There was a chess question on Only Connect yesterday evening.

The teams had to find the fourth item in a sequence starting a1: R, b1: N, c1: B.

The first team thought it might be something to do with cards and went for "d1: Y".

The second team knew it was to do with chess but couldn't remember where the big guys started so answered "d1: K".
