Food Detectives

Post by Neil Graham » Thu May 12, 2016 7:18 pm

Last year a number of players from Nottinghamshire were recruited (following liaison with the ECF & BBC) to assist in a programme in the above series.

For those of you that would watch it airs tomorrow on BBC-2 at 7.30pm or catch it later on i-player.

So what was it about?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

"On BBC2 tonight at 7.30pm ‘Food Detectives’ features an article on the perils and pitfalls of food labelling, and calls on the help of the Notts. Chess Association in the programme’s quest for clarification and understanding at the Nottingham Playhouse."

So, ah, why us?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Because a lot of food labelling is obscure and confusing. And they thought only the keen analytical minds of chess players could decipher it?

I tended to assume "because chess players are very likely inept middle-aged men who don't read the labels in the first place" but I am still hoping otherwise.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Or, because chessplayers will swallow anything that's put in front of them?

Neil & Notts will be arranging the food at the county matches on Saturday week. So this is preparation for the U160 match. :D

That's Arbiters

I wasn't necessarily referring to edible items, Prof.

But I know by now about the gourmet escapades associated with SoA and other 4NCL fine diners.

Therefore it was a mistake to accuse all chessplayers of buffeting(?) on anything remotely edible.

Poor over-worked, half-starved Arbiters, on the other hand, just have to chow down on dubious delicacies on the fly.

The Notts chess players feature from approximately 12 minutes in (for the next six minutes) and can be seen on i-player, as Neil indicated:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07bk7fy

They have to make their "move" in lightning style (10 seconds) but consultation is allowed. The fast time limit and confusing labelling certainly don't help them to rank fat-content in three samples of food.

All publicity is good publicity!
