4 Extra squares to be added to the chess board. Knights only

Post by Kevin O'Rourke » Mon Oct 10, 2016 12:33 pm

Imagine 4 extra squares beyond each corner that can only be reached by a Knight. After the Knight lands on A1 it can move off the board to secret square where it now attacks A1. It would be rarely used and might be a bit whacky, but do you think it could catch on. An extra super power for the steed. Applies to all 4 corners.

Imagine starting with two kings.

A bit wacky but it might catch on.

This is similar to the variant "Pocket Knight Chess" that David Pritchard regarded as one of the more playable/ interesting ones: "Both players remove ("pocket") their knights. At any time during the game a player may enter a pocket knight on any empty square instead of moving." (But the knights are rather more powerful in David's variant than the one you suggest.)

I think chess is quiet difficult and interesting enough as it is, without having extra squares and pieces.( but then at 85 you don't like changes ! )

Er no, Kevin. I don't think that it could catch on.

It would make the Frankenstein-Dracula variation unplayable for Black. I do not favour it.

The Chess shop on Baker Street is currently selling a three dimensional Star Trek themed chess set.

I don't think that's going to catch on either.

How much are they asking for it?

They are very collectable.

A real chessplayer would never move his Knight into the corner of the board.

Knights on the rim are dim.

In the book Invisible chess moves the rare times when Knights are on the corners are discussed

Pocket Knights is more fun. Pointless having this suggestion of a variant. This is the sort of thing that messes up having the right number of pieces for a normal game of chess.

The star trek variant may get some mileage if went with Big Bang Theory as has rock, scissors, paper.
