St Louis USCF club pay for full-time GM
This just shows how big chess really is in America. What other club in this country could afford to pay for a full-time GM?!

I don't think many other American clubs could afford it either tbh
In fact the complaints US chess enthusiasts make about the game's "low profile" there are uncannily similar to ours (not least on this board) And when it comes to the national federation........

Except according to the photo and the FIDE website the story should more accurately be IM in residence. Obviously the author doesn't know the difference.

Ben Finegold gained his 3rd GM norm a couple of months ago and, as his rating is 2530, it`s just a formality.

This appointment has very little to do with chess being big in the US and very much with the generosity of Rex Sinquefield, the millionaire retired investment guru, who is a St Louis resident and has already financed the last US championship in St Louis with a record prize fund, bought up the library of his hero Bobby Fischer, and given the St Louis Chess Club its own premises with daily opening.JamesMurphy wrote:This just shows how big chess really is in America.
Mr Sinquefield is a longtime reader of my Saturday Financial Times column so I made sure when reporting Nakamura's US title victory to include deserved praise for Sinquefield.
I understand that Mr Sinquefield will probably visit London next month to watch some of the Classic at Olympia, so as a rather more practical suggestion than some in this forum for promoting British chess, I recommend thinking up some ideas which would further his aim to promote US chess while also helping here. For example now that the sponsor of the Staunton Memorial has withdrawn, it could be worth looking at seeing if he would contribute to that, replacing the Dutch contingent by Americans. Another idea could be a match in St Louis between David Howell and Ray Robson, 15, the youngest ever US GM.

Don't see much on that page about chess Ian. Certainly worth bookmarking in case I ever need to go for an erotic massage in France, though.
