Same, but simpler, question about board 3 prizes - Cori gets gold; Kramnik & Piorun both drew, does David overtake either with a win today?Christopher Kreuzer wrote: ↑Fri Oct 05, 2018 11:55 amAny point trying to calculate the tiebreaks for England? Or is it not a simple calculation? (Thomas Rendle estimated 7th place above.)

I'm thinking an England win would put them above France, either India or Poland (but not both) and between two and four of the teams playing one another, so 5th to 7th?

I'm confident I could lose Tomczak-Adhiban with either colour. So maybe some life in that match.

the computer hates rf6 from Jones, although in his case possible is deliberate risk taking to keep the game going

Re: Batumi Olympiad
Tomczak perhaps the more likely loser, though, since he has to play for a win given that Poland are out of the medals if he draws (and may even win gold if he wins) whereas India are out of the medals regardless.

Meanwhile Jennifer Wu has finally lost, and it looks like Irina Krush is going the same way.

If it was the last round of an open and he was playing a player 200 points lower than him I think he would definitely rather play a complex ending where he is worse than allow a draw. He is better at endings and more willing to take risks than most GMs. The match does not depend on his game.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Fri Oct 05, 2018 12:14 pmWhy would he do that?Paul Cooksey wrote: ↑Fri Oct 05, 2018 12:09 pmthe computer hates rf6 from Jones, although in his case possible is deliberate risk taking to keep the game going
I might be coming up with a complex reason where none exists and he simply misassessed, by computer standards, the position.

Now both Muzychuks have won, Ukraine are 3-0 and unless something extraordinary happens in this game they will win the gold medals. The USA will end up with nothing which is a shame.JustinHorton wrote: ↑Fri Oct 05, 2018 12:17 pmMeanwhile Jennifer Wu has finally lost, and it looks like Irina Krush is going the same way.

I'm thinking he surely must have, because until England actually have the match in the bag, he's not going to be thinking about anything other than a half, is he?Paul Cooksey wrote: ↑Fri Oct 05, 2018 12:22 pm

Looks like Armenia may only 2-2 and that's also possible in CZE-UKR, so sixth or even fifth place is now definitely on the cards.
Either would be our best placing since fourth in 1996.

Yes, I'm not inclined to believe the advertised 1-0 result of Bluebaum v Melkumyan

Does Gawain's result affect our tie-break?
(Computer thinks he is totally lost now after 55...Kg7.)

Tiredness playing it's part on both sides but with White down on time will find it difficult to finish off. I don't think it affects the tiebreaks
