It is not clear if it was worn with brim facing forward, rearwards or at "jaunty angle" which I'm told conveys a degree of "coolness".

DLs accuracy is calculated at a mere 99.6% whereas his hapless 1930 opponent managed a trifling 66.2 %

The question is what happened to the .4 % ? Bad day at the office ?

A contrast with what? In this game White's (L_Declan) accuracy was 99.1% compared to Black's 92.9%. Black blundered a piece just before the end of the game but won because White abandoned the game.

wasn't Barnstaple 1972 your last OTB tourney ? Your memory of your own events is probably better than mine so perhaps you weren't counting weekend events.

Why does that matter? Being an ECF Level 1 Arbiter is good enough, and as you know, the next one of those is in a few weeks.

You need someone who is FIDE licensed as an Arbiter at National Levels (NA) or above.

Current ECF policy is that anyone who is ECF Level 1 or above will be licensed on request.

That is a question for Adrian Elwin, Director of Home Chess. He indicated at the reconvened Chess Arbiters' Association AGM in Hastings that there would be such a course.

I may have the year wrong, try Hammersmith 1973. My final round opponent was Jonathan Speelman.

Leonard, I played at Hammersmith 1973 and I recall that you also played. Until now I had no idea that it was your last event.

The tournament was won jointly by Tim Harding (of this parish) and Bojan Kurajica. During the last ten years or so, I have had the opportunity to ask each of them whether he remembered the event. One had clear memories of it, the other no recollection whatsoever.

No prizes for guessing which was which.

I was there as well, losing to Mestel without trouble in the first round, but eventually reaching 4/7 by winning in the last two rounds.

I couldn't remember that tournament but have now checked and I got +0=2-3 against a lower rated opponents in one of the 5-round events, which is why I couldn't remember it. Obviously, there were some distinguished opponents in the Open. Was Ray Keene playing that year?
