I saw a recommendation somewhere to take vitamin D supplements during the lockdown, to compensate for the lack of exposure to sunlight. I ordered some on Amazon.

I cannot remember where I saw the recommendation.

I have been popping a cod liver pill out of habit once every two-three days for the past 40 odd years.
No idea how it started, probably advice from my dear old mum, who was also advised a spoonful of malt once a week.

Fish is meant to be a good source for vit D. Salmon (i cannot stand the stuff) is up there along with sardines.

For years Sardines on toast has been a very common snack in my house. (easy to explain that one - it's cheap!)
so I must be getting my vit D from there, certainly not the sunshine.

That is a good answer. I was asked the very question at a school where I was doing some coaching. I explained more or less what Roger said, and said in tournaments you play several games, the organizers want players to more or less alternate who goes first, and white going first is a convention to make that easy to organize. I also pointed out that black goes first in draughts, which was also a convention. The pupils all seemed happy with the answer. Some board games say the oldest player goes first...

Vitamin B12 is good - you don't need much, but it is only really available in meat & fish. Vegetarians may have a problem.

You can get vitamin D from sunlight, but it does depend how much sunlight there is.

Usual warning though that Vitamins A, D and E are oil-soluble so if you overdose on them, you can have problems.
Vitamins B and C are water-soluble, so if you overdose, you can lose some of the excess naturally. If you take more than about 1 g of vitamin C a day, you may well spend a lot of time in the bathroom...
