Unexpected chess painting

Approximately - Kandinsky (b1866) was a bit earlier, the others (b1881 and 82) a bit later. Perhaps he liked the older style - nothing wrong with that. I know nothing about art so have no wish to criticise his style. I rather like it.

Oh I see - even so, he painted more like much earlier artists. The schools may have changed - if you go the Slade and RA now, and try to paint like Constable and Gainsborough, they'll get very cross, because you're not thinking for yourself, maybe then they wanted you to be technically good, rather than innovative. (You can be both.)

I'm not criticising him for painting what he wanted to paint.
