He may gain some rating points, but they only have eight players. Seemingly they started with 9 and then one dropped out after one round. I recall that back in August in the Northumbria Masters that Tim segregated the players in the GM and IM tournaments as far as possible. The reasoning being that a withdrawal would remove Norm opportunities.Matt Bridgeman wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 12:05 pmIs Tim Wall closing in on an IM norm over in Ireland?

I've been following the tournament and they have nine players but only two IMs. Attempts were made to find a third the day before and even after the event started but weren't successful.Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06, 2022 12:11 pmHe may gain some rating points, but they only have eight players. In the GM norm event Stefansson is on 7/8 which will be a GM norm provided his last round game takes place.

I believe Tim already has the three norms required from before he gave up to concentrate on work - only to return as we all inevitably do ...

Unfortunately his earlier norms were not registered with FIDE before the deadline for this to be done.Paul Dargan wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 10:50 amI believe Tim already has the three norms required from before he gave up to concentrate on work - only to return as we all inevitably do ...

Ah, that is slightly unfortunate. And you might have thought he would know about such things?David Sedgwick wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 11:26 amUnfortunately his earlier norms were not registered with FIDE before the deadline for this to be done.Paul Dargan wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 10:50 amI believe Tim already has the three norms required from before he gave up to concentrate on work - only to return as we all inevitably do ...

My understanding was that he was awarded the title "subject to rating requirement" - as I believe was common, and that minutes stating such exist... so if he makes 2400 there is hope.

https://www.saund.co.uk/britbase/pgn/19 ... iewer.html reports his first IM norm in 1995.
https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-ente ... 94914.html (Oxford 1998)
which led me to find the crosstable in TWIC: https://theweekinchess.com/html/twic216.html
Unfortunately he wasn't aware of my appeal for norm seekers to contact me (I believe he was in Russia) so the norms lapsed. I thought I had been pretty thorough in tracking down all norms but sadly some were missed.

Don't reproach yourself in any way. You went well beyond the call of duty in seeking to track old norms down.LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 4:30 pmI thought I had been pretty thorough in tracking down all norms but sadly some were missed.

It had been on the forum. Wasn't the problem in part at least because a practice had built up of not claimimg Norms until a title application was made?LawrenceCooper wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 4:30 pm

Maybe a few knobs can be twisted in Russia and the detail waived?

Part of the problem may be that a player makes a norm, possibly gets a norm certificate, but won't necessarily check that it's on the FIDE website. In Tim's case, with norms in 1995 and 1998 (and possibly others) I can't recall when the internet became accessible to everyone and when FIDE started displaying such information. My norms (apart from the one that expired in 1987) were all in the 1990s and I'm fairly sure I had no idea about such things then.Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Wed Jan 12, 2022 5:40 pmIt had been on the forum. For early adopters, retail dial up internet became available from 1993 and 1994. TWIC for example started up in 1994. That doesn't mean to say that chess federations, FIDE and arbiters were up ro speed.
