I finished with 4/10 in the super rapidplay at the london classic in 2014, things that should be noted are i finished on the same points as nick pert, petra fink-nunn and the future british champion harry grieve see if you can find any other notable juniors in the following snippet of 257th place:-

i actually entered the isle of man masters one year in 2014 and it was an embarrassment i finished near last losing every game i played:-

where i finished 257th there were 412 odd players and nakamura finished in first with the likes of anand only getting 8/10 and speelman 7/10 so my 4/10 seems ok. nigel short won the isle man masters 2014 i entered ahead of adams and mvl

I'm not a great fan of the rating system. If, as the great and the good never tire of keep telling us, you learn
from your defeats, why do they deduct rating points if you have, by that rational, just learnt something and improved!

However you were 390 points lower than the 2nd bottom rated player (1948).
Everyone else in that field was over 2000. The average rating was 2353 http://chess-results.com/tnr147695.aspx ... turdet=YES

Even I with my cock-eyed view of things would have advised not going in for that one.
But there again, why not? If you had the entrance fee to spare, fancied a holiday on the Isle of Man
and a chance play in the same tournament as some great players then go for it. Good Luck.

You say it was embarrassing. Not at all, you played, set a few traps that did not come off and lost.
You did not lose on purpose, gave it your best, what is there to be embarrassed about?

At least you stayed the course which says a great deal about your character and enjoyment of the game.
A lot of others after a string of 4-5 defeats would have gone home which causes needless headaches for the organisers.
Indeed, because of call off's, (for what ever reason) the tournament director Alan Ormsby
played in the last two rounds to ensure players had a game.

it of course became the biggest swiss in the world later on, 2014 was the first time back and i tried to get in the major another year and they turned me down saying i wasnt strong enough. actually after i entered the isle of man in 2014 i pulled out when i realised how strong it was but alan ormsby convinced me to re-enter. i tried entering the northubrian masters in 2018 and tim wall gave me short shrift and i had paid 800 quid on a non-returnable hilton hotel.

john if you study and apply yourself there is still time-look at korchnoi and smyslov, do you need a zimmer frame btw lol atleast youve made it past 64 a very dangerous age for chess players.
