Most of us have probably heard of Chess Records but it only just came to my attention that there is a label called Chess Club.

Hi Justin,

There are a number of places in Edinburgh that do 4 books for a £1.00 (Bonnyrigg has a shop full of books that does
8 for a £1.00) so I do a fair bit of cheap experimenting, especially if it is Sci-fi though it can be anything from Archer to
Asimov, the Antarctic to the Egyptians.
I give them all a chance. Occasionally I hit gold but a lot of the time (about 30-40 pages if it's fiction ) I put it back into a
different charity shop. For some reason I cannot throw a book out in the rubbish. That just seems wrong.

So if I see any of the 'Chess Team' books on my travels I'll get it. I popped into a charity shop today (I rarely walk past one )
and I left a chess book on the shelf (£1.00). I already have it and stopped a while back collecting doublers...triples...

It was one of the blue Routledge books, No 6, Practical Chess Endings by David Hooper. ( a good series that lot)
But I know me and next time I pass that way and if it's still there I'll just buy it.

Just in case you haven't. Have you read the anthology PAWN TO INFINITY edited by Fred Saberhagen with Joan Saberhagen? Published in 1982.
I am currently re-reading it. There are a number of fascinating short stories, weavig sf together with chess, or other mind sports.

Hi Stewart,

I do not think I have read that one, I'll keep a look out for it.
My favourite Sci- Fi that featured chess was 'Men, Martians and Machines' by Eric Frank Russell pub 1955.
It's Hilarious and I think Gene Roddenberry must have read it, It pre-dates the Star Trek theme.
(go all over the universe looking for life with a crew of human and aliens, including chess mad Martians, and having an adventure.)
