It is a long and thoughtful interview, and she is clear that the paragraph you have plucked out describes just one of a variety of plausible reasons.

(She made some other distinctly hedged comments about emotionality where I think she was just spitballing to avoid saying "no, don't be silly".)

You will of course continue to make that interpretation, but I can see not a shred of evidence to support it. Her comments are quite clear and well expounded - if she actually believed the opposite, there was no reason for her to have said what she did.

Check out in which paragraphs she's using simple declarative statements, and in which she's saying "girls tend to think"/"I'm just speculating but I wonder whether"/"sometimes women and men tend to"/"I suspect that"/"to put it simplistically"/"some of the girls are probably lacking"/"I need to do more research". Interviewees from the Confuci-o-sphere aren't known for pushing back against interviewers - it's a "face" thing.

Are you using "fundamental" to mean "biological" there? A lot rests on that.

I think that common argument is a touch idealistic, because when freedom of speech HAS been threatened, it's usually by post hoc objections. When people get up in the morning and decide they're going to crack down on free speech today, they do it by putting consequences in place for saying the wrong thing. Not by, say, shoving a sock in your mouth, which would require a lot of socks.

Anyway, you can keep doing deep linguistic analysis of her comments to demonstrate that she actually meant the opposite of what she said, I shall continue to take them at face value.

No doubt there are many possible ways to cheat, depending on the level of efforts to defeat the cheating. Unfounded allegations and possible suspicions are major issues.

I forgot to remind you all a couple of days ago that 'Pawn Sacrifice' 2014 about the Fischer-Spassky match of 1972 was due to be shown Monday 19.9. on BBC 2 from 11.15 pm. But was it forgetfulness or prescience? It didn't happen because the Queen's Funeral upset all the scheduling.
