Late Summer Torquay Congress 31 Aug to 6 Sept 2024

Good to see the Riviera Congress return this year. This event is the successor to the former very popular Paignton Congress. It features a seven day FIDE-rated open together with two five day morning competitions (u1900 & u1700) and two in the afternoon (u1800 & u1600). The rating restricted events are not FIDE-rated.

I’ve been playing in this or the previous Paignton congress for the past 23 years. The weather is usually very good (although no guarantees!) and, for those of you who care about this, there are few juniors because the Autumn school term has started or is about to do so. There are special rates available for those choosing to stay at the venue and loads of decent B&Bs nearby. I would go so far as to say this is the perfect chess holiday in England.

It's too late for me to get the time off work for this year but I'm definitely considering this for 2025. I've always enjoyed my visits to Torquay when the British has been held there and it may be good compensation for the years where that tournament isn't held at a resort.
