Hardly news nowadays but Kramnik has been banned again by chess.com for publicly accusing multiple opponents of cheating. He's banned for a month after successive weeks of public accusations. Ironically he finished second on tie-break behind Hans Niemann on 10/11 in the early Titled Tuesday before scoring 8 in the late one. His ban starts with the Julius Baer Generations Cup play-in today.

I don't like this mentality of silencing anyone who dares to make accusations, it's like the way tinpot dictators operate. "There's a zero crime rate on our glorious island" (because we killed everybody who reported a crime)

He seems to accuse every player that doesn't lose to him though. Even when he scored 10/11 he publicly accused four players on Twitter.

You don't think they should be required to give at least a shred of evidence? Libel is a criminal act.

If you did that on lichess or chess.com they ban you for "shaming" even if you are pointing out a clear cut case so all a lot of people are allowed to do now is alude to their opponent being dodgy and hoping that casts enough doubt that others start to make reports as well.

Not sure about kramnik though, he's always had a bit of a screw loose - this is the same guy, after all, who claimed that as black he could refute ALL 1.e4 openings or that humans were still better then chess engines long after they had overpowered us. Maybe in his case it's more sour grapes that he is no longer a respected top player but that's not to say that cheaters don't exist.

It's usually a civil matter rather than a crime ...

Vladimir Kramnik was still a "respected top player" the last time I looked. Though it may be more accurate to describe players like Anand, Kasparov and Kramnik as past world champions, sort of 'emeritus' top players.

This is quite an interesting Reddit thread about how abysmally poor the anti cheat policies are on the fide arena - as an experiment this guy made an account, used an engine in every single game from start to finish, told the site what he was doing and still didn't get punished!

FIDE Online Arena is run by World Chess plc, Agon as was.

A quick sample of market shares
FIDE Arena 363 players
chess.com 118,557 games
lichess 27,500 games (varies by the second)

Games will be no more than half the number of players.

Arena titles appear alongside the OTB ones on tournament listings, but perhaps that's caused by downloads from the FIDE rating site.

I cannot help but think that if chess.com detected the use of chess engines in positions that were theory to at least one of the participants, they were possibly correct. That does not mean that the engine consultation took place whilst the game was being played.

Well, exactly, Roger. Chess.com correctly noted the symptoms ("No human could have managed this on his own") but incorrectly identified the cause ("So he must have had help during the game"). Without actually being able to see the player "live", that's always liable to happen.

Shocking. But not difficult to detect. And so clumsily done. In similar circumstances, the late Igor Rausis got a six-year ban and was stripped of his GM title.

(The current player in the dock is Kiril Shevchenko.)

I think he won one of those Titled Tuesday tournaments recently.
Edit: Yes, in fact it was very recently! https://www.chess.com/news/view/shevche ... ber-8-2024
